Single Crochet Discs

Chain 2 loosely

Rnd 1 / Work 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook. – 6 sc
Rnd 2 / 2 sc in each sc around. – 12 sc
Rnd 3 / (2sc in next st, sc in next st.) 6 times. – 18 sc
Rnd 4 / Sc in next st, (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st. – 24 sc
Rnd 5 / (2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sts) 6 times. 30 sc
Rnd 6 / sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, (sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times, sc in each of next 2 sc. – 36 sc
Rnd 7 / (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts) 6 times. – 42 sc
N.B. rounds 7 through 10: at end of rnd, work a sc in each of next 2 sts, and place marker in last st made for beginning of next round.
Rnd 8 / Sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next sc, (sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times, sc in each of next 3 sts. – 48 sc
Remaining rounds: At end of rnd, work a sc in each of next 3 sts and place marker in last sc made for beginning of next round.
EVEN rounds: After working rnds having 20, 31, 42, 53, and 64 sts between increase groups, work an even round. (no increases) (Work 10 increase rounds and an even round; this 11 round group would also be good for striping.)
To space increases evenly: Each round has one more sc between increase groups than the previous rnd.
If round being worked has an odd number of sts between inc groups, begin round with an increase in the first stitch and space other increases evenly.
If round being worked has an even number of stitches bet inc groups, begin round with half the number of even sts, increase in next stitch, and space other increases evenly, ending with (the other) half the number of even stitches.

What are these good for? Coasters, place-mats, rugs, blankets, the bottoms of bags, etc.

I originally found the pattern in a magazine; it was for a place-mat and coaster set and worked up in assorted colors of thread. My first try at it was an 18” diameter cat-bed liner in Phentex. Next, using several strands (two? three? four?) of Phentex together, I made a multi-color (no black or white!), six-foot diameter rug for the children’s room; it eventually made its way to Susan’s, where it was used first as a passageway rug and later in Diana’s room. At least someone liked it, even if mine didn’t! My biggest such disc is in light green acrylic yarn and is about eight feet in diameter; it’s mine! But it may be undone and the yarn reused; no one quite knows what to do with it! The last one I made (Spring 2008) was made of the most gosh-awful excuse for yarn … working it made the skin slough off my fingertips – all ten!! However, even it has its use. My sister-in-law, Khozama, uses it on her porch to sort beans and such. It’s near four feet in diameter, and the ‘yarn’ came from two poorly made (beginners’ efforts?) blankies I’d bought at a second-hand store. They were in strips, of which some were a lovely soft yarn that became scarves. The ugly yarn became the aforementioned sorting mat.
