A Brief report of Five days Training on

“Content Based Teaching Methodologies”

Dated: 31st December to 4th January 2009

Venue: SAFWCO HID Training Hall Qasimabad,Hyderabad.

Five days training was organized by SAFWCO for its Community Model Schools’ teachers to enhance the capacity of teachers through subject based teaching methodologies, so as they meet the challenges of professionalism and for quality education.

First day of training:

Opening ceremony:

The first day of training was started with the recitation of Holy Quran by one of the participants.MissArbeelaSahar Program Officer HID SAFWCOwelcomed the facilitators Mr. Parvaiz Pirzada(Ed. Consultant & Trainer), Saeed Naseem (Trainer). Azra Khaskheli (Trainer) and all participants of training, she said Safwco always tried to arrange Trainings, Seminars and Workshops in sense of enhancing the capacity so this training also one of them efforts, and she also shared the objectives of training.

Mr. Ali Gul Khushik(Manager HID SAFWCO)

He welcomed to all and said: Safwco is working for development not only individuals or society but also tried to contribute development of nation, this training which safwco is going to organize for teachers b/c our new generation/ our children are our future and we believe our teachers can play a role for their betterment. Training dates were postponed due to the anniversary of Muhtarma Benazer Sahiba, that’s why this training is being started few days later. We expect you will learn from this training and you should share your teaching gaps. So as you may learn more and implement this training at class room level. You may also share your suggestions about the sessions to make this training more fruitful and training plan can be amended.

Dr. Allah Nawaz(Manager for Program Development SAFWCO)

He said that The Safwco’s main objective is to develop the human skills, in this regard HID is striving well.This is a chance for you that HID have provided you to learn from well learned people. Basically this is the process of learning and it is an interactive learning and you are entering from teaching to learning. This is an art that you understand the child learning process.

  • You have to transfer the skill.
  • Behaviors ( you have to teach through your behaviors)
  • Practice (Child will copy your practices) and practical teaching.
  • You have to develop confidence in your students to dare ask the questions. So as we may develop creators not the followers.

He also mentioned that you have to deliver knowledge, skill and attitude among the students.

Arbeela Sahar (Program Officer HID SAFWCO)

She assured the participants that HID team will try to facilitate the participants and urged senior teachers to facilitate the junior teachers. She welcomed the participants for any facilitation required by the HID team.

Activity: Introduction. By Mr. Parvaiz Pirzada (Facilitator)

The facilitator distributed the sheets among the participants containing boxes regarding to subject skills. And said the participants to meet with the participants and ask the participants who haven’t knowledge about that particular subject like math, science, English etc. After filling the columns with the names of teachers the facilitator asked the maximum number of columns filled by the participants. The maximum number was 18 filled by Miss. Faiza. After that the facilitator got the views of the participants and explained the objectives of activity.

Day one session

Norms Setting: by Azra & Parvaiz Sahib (Facilitators)

The facilitators conducted brain storming exercise for making learning environment pleasant. The participants shared their views as under:

  • Before speaking participants should raise their hands.
  • Every one should respect others opinion.
  • Mobile should be on silent mode.
  • Criticism should be in positive sense.
  • Every one should have right to express his/her ideas.
  • Time punctuality.
  • Every one should listen others’ views with interest.

Session

Effective Parental Involvement: byAzra & Naseem Saeed Sahib (Facilitators)

The facilitators explained the importance of parental involvement in process of teaching and learning. The facilitators asked the question that how can parents be involved in this process. The participants shared their views as under.

  • The parents prepare their children and send them to school.
  • Parents should give good environment to their children.
  • Parents should give attention to the education of their children.
  • Participation of parents in school programs.
  • To support their children for completion of their children’s home work.
  • To provide syllabus books and educational material to their children.
  • To keep eye on activities of their children.
  • To encourage their children

The facilitator explained the points and shared their views regarding to parents involvement and shared some techniques for effective parents’ involvement and role of teacher.

Group Activity:The facilitator conducted an activity through distributing a sheet containing a case study of a child. Who always left his home for school but he didn’t attend the school. His parents were satisfied that heir child is going to school. The facilitator made four groups of the participants and gave 10 minutes to write down the possible reasons and suggestions on white paper sheet. The participants wrote following reasons and gave their presentations.

Reasons:

  1. Lack of participation by parents.
  2. Irresponsibility of teacher.
  3. Punishment by teacher to the child.
  4. Lack of attention on child by parents.
  5. Lack of interest for school by child.
  6. Lack of coordination with teachers by parents.
  7. Bad behavior of other children with that child.
  8. Unavailability of syllabus books.
  9. Lack of confidence.

Suggestions:

  1. Sharing with teachers.
  2. Activity based teaching.
  3. Friendly behavior of teacher.
  4. Monthly parents meeting.
  5. Teacher should inform the parents.
  6. School environment should be made pleasant
  7. Improvement of physical and non physical environment of school.

After the presentations by participants the facilitator explained the points. And also she shared the facts and figures of educational status in Pakistan. She shared that.

  • According to HDI Pakistan in on 135th number out of 175.
  • There are only 5000 Girls schools out of 40000.

Activity:

After that the facilitator made two groups of the participants and gave topic to discuss on that. The topic was as under.

  1. Which activities should be conducted to increase the parents’ involvement?

The participants wrote the points on sheets after discussing in their group. And the facilitator invited group leaders to discuss their points.

Group 1:

  1. we can involve the parents in art days
  2. To sow the plantation
  3. In games days
  4. Hand crops and cultivation
  5. Cleanliness week
  6. Sharing the success of children

Group 2:

  1. To conduct the class by parents like story telling
  2. Sharing with parents at gathering like marriage ceremony
  3. Awards through parents and involve in program
  4. Health awareness to the parents

Review of this session conduct by Mr. Saeed Nasim

He shared that teachers have responsibility to meet with the parents who have the communication skills. To fine a day for parents visit in a week or after closing school or communicate with parents through a letter. Teachers can celebrate the birth day of children at school. During lecture of facilitator a teacher asked that parents have complained that school arranges only activities and they don’t teach. The facilitator replied that it is due to parent’s behavior. We want creativity in schools we should be prepared of these types of behaviors when the parents understand these things then they realized its value and also we should make them understand during parents’ days and other programs.

After that the facilitator asked to participants that when you become a teacher so can you tell that what were question in your mind.

Participants shared as:

  1. Environment
  2. Behavior of students
  3. Will we satisfy the children?
  4. Our methodology
  5. Will we understand the children?
  6. Communities behavior
  7. Education team behavior
  8. Weather children will like me or not
  9. Children will accept me or not

Then facilitator shared that we always plan for running class that how we will handle the class, we always expect that children not make a noise in class but we have need to create the relationship with children.

Activity (Roll play) by Mr. Saeed Naseem

Facilitator gave the hand out to participants and said that read this handout and discuss on that. And after discussion write the reason why does it is happen? Then facilitator made groups and gave the five minutes for completing this activity.

After completing activity the facilitator invited the group’s leaders to present their presentation.

Group 1:

  1. Lake interest of parents
  2. Teacher was irresponsible
  3. confusion in study
  4. Punishment
  5. Parents was not paying attention to children

Group 2

  1. Parents have not any information about school
  2. lake interest of student
  3. behavior of teacher
  4. Haven’t course

Group 3

  1. Communication with parents
  2. Lake interest of teacher
  3. concentration of students

Group 4

  1. don’t like the school
  2. He was not satisfy with the environment

Further points of this group were same as the other group shared.

After listening the reasons the facilitator said to participants now tell the suggestions that how we can remove or solve these problems.

Participants shared as:

  1. Progress sharing
  2. friendly environment of teacher
  3. Parents meeting
  4. Individually communicate to teacher
  5. Teacher should inform to parents about children

After that the facilitator briefly explains about parent’s participation in education.

Role plays:

The facilitator gave handouts containing themes of role plays and said participants to read it and present role plays.After presentation of role plays the facilitator briefed about that.

  1. When children bring some thing in school teacher should admire them.
  2. Teacher should teach/encourage children for sharing things of each other.
  3. Teacher should encourage the children for their work and display in front of other students.
  4. Teacher should encourage that child who gave suggestion to make cards.
  5. Teacher should teach children to respect other children.
  6. Teacher should teach children for waiting their turn.
  7. Teacher should listen views of children with attention.
  8. To resolve the dispute between children through quoting “Hadeeth” or good quotation.
  9. To resolve the dispute by getting suggestions of children.
  10. Advice children for patience and sacrifice.
  11. Teacher should teach children, not be jealous with others.

Different qualities in children:

The facilitator explained that every child has different qualities and every child have different level. Some children are good in writing or in oral. If one child is good in creative writing and he doesn’t present his work in actual wording, teacher should give him the work of creative writing. After that the facilitator asked the participants to give an example from their class rooms. The participants told some problems regarding to their class rooms.

Group 1:

Some children are less talkative and they can not express their ideas.

Facilitator: teacher should arrange more activities of speaking so as every child have chance of speaking.

Group 2:

One I was conducting my class, during that two children started to fight. I stopped teaching and said class let us play a game and then I observed that those two children start to talk with each other and their anger removed. And they become freid of each other.

Group 3:

Once two students were sitting together on a desk, one of them was in School uniform while second was not. The student in uniform refused to sit with her who was not in uniform. I said them to sit separate. But after the girl in uniform realized and felt sorry for that behavior.

Facilitator:

Teacher should not make them separate but make realize that girl not to come without uniform at school and also the other girl not to behave others like that.

Group 4:

Miss. Najma shareda case study of two girls in class.One girl who was weak in study and hadn’t no interest in class while other girl always taking interest in study. And I gave her star on good work. I make sit them on one desk together. And in this way other girl also started to take interest in study and tired to get star in her class work.

One teacher complaint that when I listen the lesson of one student other students star to make noise. The facilitator said that we should differentiate between academic noise and noise without objective. During discussion on that the participants shared their different views.

The facilitator explained the objectives of reading like

Session:

Teaching Language in Preparatory Classes: by Azra (Facilitator)

The facilitator asked the participants that what kind of methods teachers adopt for teaching language in preparatory classes. The participants responded as under.

Group work:

The facilitator made the five groups of the participants and gave them the text books and said them to complete following task and she gave them 10minutes to complete the group work.

Group 1: make the list of two and three letter words.

Group 2: make the list of same family letters.

Group 3: making news and reading.

Group 4: Role plays.

Group 5: writing poem and composing tune.

The participants completed their group work and presented it.

Home work:

  1. Message of 2009 for their own selves.
  2. Importance of opening ceremony and how we can replicate it in our schools?
  3. Introduction activities’ objectives and how we can utilize it in our schools?
  4. Why training rules are developed? And how we can implement it in our class rooms.
  5. Parents’ involvement in educational activities.
  6. What is the importance of Management in class room and what are benefits to a teacher?
  7. What is the importance of language teaching?

Day Two 1st January 2009:

The day started with the recitation of Holy Quran by Miss. Najma Principal CMS Khan Muhammad Khaskheli. After that the facilitator Miss. Azra asked the participants a question that: What will you do in 2009? Or message of 2009. The participants replied as under.

  1. I shall improve the education in my School.
  2. Involve the mothers or improvement of school.
  3. It is my wish there were peace in our country.
  4. I shall increase my education.
  5. I want to bring more improvement in my school.
  6. I pray that may Allah the Almighty accept the prayers of all.
  7. I pray from Allah that we do that you want and not we do that you don’t want.
  8. I shall try to improve my understanding.

Review of Previous day: (Miss. Azra)

After that the facilitator conducted the review and reflection of previous day.

Lesson Planning: Miss. Azra:

The facilitator put an example to the participants that SAFWCO is sending you Karachi for two days training what would you do.

The participants responded:

  • We’ll get permission from our parents.
  • We’ll pack our clothes and take necessary things for journey.
  • We’ll arrange money for journey.
  • We will get information for our departure.
  • And few other responses came from participants.

The facilitator explained that what any thing you thought for going to Karachi. And you thought for arrangement, it is called planning.

The facilitator discussed about the importance of planning and then he related it with lesson planning. After that facilitator formed groups of participants and distributed syllabus books. He directed each group to plan a model lesson and deliver it. The participants completed their group work and gave the names to their groups. While the group leaders presented the group work
