Show Me Mitosis and Meiosis!

Objective: Demonstrate your knowledge of the stages of mitosis and meiosis during the cell cycle.

Materials: Writing utensil, Play-dough, creativity

Rules:

1. Inappropriate use of Play-dough will result in student(s) removal from Play-dough activity, a writing assignment and note-taking from the book.

2. Students will stay seated during the activity. If more materials are needed, one group member will be assigned the task of getting these materials.

3. All group members will participate in the group activity.

4. Each step of the activity must be shown to the teacher before moving on to the next step.

5. Students must use both their creativity and their knowledge of mitosis and meiosis to show each stage.

6. Students must fill out this worksheet as they work through each step. This worksheet will be handed in at the end of class and graded for completion.

Steps:

1. Create a cell that includes a cell membrane, a nuclear membrane, and three (3) tetrads in the nuclear membrane.

2. This cell is now undergoing Prophase I. Show it. What happens during this stage that lets us know it is Prophase I? How does this compare to the process of prophase in mitosis? (Make sure to show any changes that occur to the chromosomes during this stage.)

3. This cell is now undergoing Metaphase I. Show it. What happens during this stage that lets us know it is Metaphase I? How does this compare to the process of metaphase in mitosis?

4. What is the next stage in meiosis? Show it. What happens during this stage?

5. The cell is now going through Telophase I. Show it. What happens during this stage that lets us know it is Telophase I? How does this compare to telophase in mitosis?

6. After Telophase I, the cell goes through ______. Show it. How many cells are produced during this stage?

7. In mitosis following telophase, how many cells are produced after the process referenced in the blank in question number 6?

8. Use the following table to list the stages that occur during Meiosis II, and what happens during each of those stages. As you list each stage, build it with Play-dough and show the teacher before moving on to the next stage.

Stage of Meiosis II / What happens to the cell during each stage?

9. How many cells are produced at the end of meiosis? How does this compare to the number produced at the end of mitosis?

10. How many chromosomes does each cell have at the end of meiosis? How does this compare to the number produced at the end of mitosis?

11. What kinds of cells use meiosis? Where are these cells found in the female? In the male?

12. What kinds of cells use mitosis?
