Short Story – Literary Elements Project

You will have the opportunity with this project to create your own projects and refer to stories that you have chosen.

Your primary tasks are:

  1. Demonstrate a lower level understanding of all the Literary Elements.
  2. Demonstrate a higher level understanding of at least two (2) Literary Elements.

note: Refer to the “Integration Matrix” to see what is expected of higher and lower level understandings. Within each level be aware of the possibility of earning an A, B, or C. To earn the desired A, B, or C you must create a project that uses at least two blocks from the chosen grade level.

Process

  • Research to locate at least two (and no more than four) short stories you will refer to as examples of the literary elements.

  • Familiarize yourself with the literary elements (see hand out)
  • Plan projects and activities to complete each primary task.

Work Ideas

Task 1

For a C

-List and Define all terms on a poster.

-Memorize all terms and pass a quiz (recall).

For a B

-Create a display that explains each element and discuss with the teacher.

For an A

-Create an illustration for the terms and put them into order of importance.

-Write a book report style essay in which you demonstrate how each element works in a particular story and explain which elements are most important to the story..

Task 2

For a C

-Write an essay in which you compare and contrast how the elements are used in two different stories.

For a B

-Judge the quality of the element’s use in a story.

For an A

-Hypothesize (make a guess based on evidence) why the author used the element in that way.
