Be prepared to provide examples. Your examples should include what you learn from each of the following:

  1. Family- teach us language ,values,(Hint: ask your parents what they value)

Example: My parents taught me to say please when I wanted something.

Explanation: If I wanted to go to my friends house and I asked my Mom “Can I go to Alex’s house?” She would reply no, because I forgot to say please. In order to get what I wanted I needed to use the word please.

Example:

Explanation of how they taught it:

  1. Media-movies ,videos, newspapers ,internet etc…. increase our knowledge base and what we value

Example: High School Musical

Explanation of how they taught it: Stick to the Status Quo: At East High, everyone fits into a specific clique — or at least, that’s what they want everyone to think. Once Troy the basketball player auditions for the school musical, everyone discovers that jocks can love to bake and nerds can love dancing. The moral of this song?

In real life, people aren’t so cut and dry. No one fits into specific cookie cutter shapes. Don’t be ashamed of something that you love. So what if you’re the star of the volleyball team? That doesn’t mean you can’t be the star of the spring musical. Take your passion and run with it.

“Yeah guys, let’s launch into a musical number about my lack of focus when we’re all supposed to be practicing!”

How did the stereotyping and discrimination influence the Roma and what did it force them to do?

Be sure you answer all parts of the question.

  • Name the stereotypes the Roma faced
  • How did those stereotypes lead to discrimination?
  • How did the discrimination impact the Roma culture?

Name the stereotypes the Roma faced?

The Roma are easily discriminated against because of the color of their skin and ‘otherness’. Otherness in this case means they are easily recognized because of how different their culture is. They were seen as being dirty, thieves, and cheaters.

How did these stereotypes lead to discrimination?

Their children were bullied at school.

They were unable to find jobs and housing. People said the jobs were filled when they went to interview. When they try to rent or buy they were told the houses were rented or sold.

How have these stereotypes and discrimination influenced(impacted) their culture?

Education isn’t valued in their because of bullying due to the stereotypes and being forced to be nomadic

They have been forced to be nomadic and perform only certain jobs.

Due to the poor treatment many Roma don’t trust other people and only marry within their group. TABOO to marry outside their culture.

As a positive, they’ve developed certain skills and parts of their culture. They are also very close with each other. They also developed their style of music

What is the cost (impact) of ethnocentrism? Why is it difficult to overcome? (Hint: stereotype and discrimination)

Ethnocentrism and stereotyping are beliefs and judgments about individuals, groups, or culture that result in negative behavior.

Discrimination is negative behavior towards individuals, group, or cultures. The discrimination usually occurs towards minority groups.

Why minority groups are easily stereotyped and discriminated against?

Minority groups are easily stereotyped because they are easily seen as different.

What is a cost to a society(the majority)when they practice discrimination?

By discriminating against a minority group, society loses the benefits of gaining new ideas or learning new things. Additionally, the society then teaches people to discriminate.

Why is cultural relativism difficult to achieve? (Hint: bias and perspective)

It is difficult to be truly objective.

Because our assumption is we’re all alike and it is difficult to be objective when looking at other people cultures.

To believe stereotypes-problem with most common stereotype is we remember negatives of others but only positives of our culture.

To evaluate and believe one’s culture is superior. Believing your culture is a winner doesn’t mean others are losers. Lines on map don’t necessarily designate cultures.
