shifnal PLANNING AREA

The Shifnal school place planning area is in the east of the county. It straddles the M54 motorway route and is the only planning area in the county to have such a transport route within its boundary. The primary A5, A41 and A464 routes also cross the area.

The main settlement in the area is Shifnal and the other settlements are all villages, which include Albrighton and Sheriffhales.

Some light industry and commercial business exists and RAF Cosford, a main military base is situated within the area, and its personnel movement can cause some issues with local school pupil numbers.

The LA’s robust forecasting models indicate that sufficient school capacity exists in the rural primary schools to meet demand in the short and medium term. The Shifnal town primary schools are forecast torequire expansion in the short to medium term to meet increased demand for places andfurther increases in demand are forecast in the longerterm as a result of new housing requirement identified in the Local Plan and will be managed at the appropriate time. A paper will follow outlining options. Sufficient capacity exists at secondary level in the short, medium and longer-term to provide for Shropshire children.

The LA’s regular primary and secondary forecasts have been translated into the following charts and tables to help explain the school place planning proposals the LA intends to take forward. Longer term forecasting methods have also been used in order to take account of the level of new housing investment identified in the current Local Plan to 2026.

Summary

Forecast numbers in the above charts and tables demonstrate that the Shifnalschool place planning area has sufficient capacity overall, at both primary and secondary level, to meet the demand in the short and medium term. The Shifnal town primary schools are forecast to require expansion in the short to medium term to meet increased demand for places. Further increases in demand are forecast in the longer term as a result of new housing in the Local Plan and these will be managed at the appropriate time. Options for addressing these issues will be provided in due course. Sufficient capacity exists at secondary level, and in the rural schools, in the short, medium and longer-term.
