SheVOTES: 1920-2015, a celebration of the 95th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage
Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at the Indianapolis Propylaeum
The general celebration will be FREE and open to the public with reservations required. A “meet and greet” opportunity with food and beverages will be available to sponsors and donors of $25 or more.
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920,by Tennessee, making it the 36th state to complete the two-thirds majority needed for the measure to become law.
Eight days after the ratification, on August 26, 1920, then-Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the 19th Amendment and proclaimed it part of the U.S. Constitution.
She Votes will be a multi-faceted event with Lori Wilson, an Emmy Award-winning anchor and reporter at WISH-TV, serving as master of ceremonies. The evening will include speakers Secretary of State Connie Lawson and Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz; the Spotlight Brass Band playing music of the era; suffragist re-enactors; and posters highlighting the struggle for the vote, as well as the Kids Ink bookstore and a musical video view of the movement related to educational competitions and prizes.
A legal education program and luncheon will be presented in conjunction with the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law with one CLE offered for attorneys who attend. The topic will be “The New Voter Suppression and the Constitution” and its impact on women voters, among others.
