Senior Research Associate

Sherrie Winton has extensive experience conducting research in social services. She has served as the Director of Interdisciplinary Studies and Associate Profession at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine where she provided program oversight and worked on several research and evaluation projects. These included research on best practices in high-impact educational initiatives. In addition, Dr. Winton worked at the Muskie School of Public Service as a Policy Associate, partnering with Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to develop policies and educational guidelines, training and education for workforce development efforts. She developed educational toolkits for professionals and community members and provided training and technical assistance.

Dr. Winton earned a Master of Education degree in Counselor Education from the University of Maine in Orono, a Master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine, and in 2013 earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Maine in Orono.

Sherrie Winton, Ph.D.

Senior Research Associate

Sherrie Winton has extensive experience teaching, conducting evaluations and research, and monitoring polices in social services. She has taught courses for both undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Maine in Orono, University of Southern Maine, and Saint Joseph’s College. Her courses have covered sexual assault prevention, cultural competency, and community mental health services among others.

Ms. Winton served for three years at Community Care (formerly called Care Development), a non-profit agency that serves children in treatment foster care and families at risk. Her work entailed supervising Family Integration Specialists and overseeing the services they provided. As the coordinator of services for children and at-risk families at Community Care, she collaborated with one of Maine’s regional sexual assault prevention and support centers (Spruce Run) to lead domestic violence awareness training and education for family service providers.

Dr. Winton spent most of her career at the Muskie School of Public Service, University of Southern Maine where she partnered with Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and statewide providers to develop policies and competency standards as well as lead training and education efforts for the workforce serving underrepresented populations. In this position, she led competency studies, which were designed to educate community case managers in areas of cultural competency, substance abuse, sexual abuse, trauma and recovery. She also assisted with conducting research on best practices for adult mental health providers’ professional development standards. Ms. Winton developed educational toolkits for professionals and community members and provided technical assistance on multiple complex projects. Her most recent experience at the Muskie School entailed serving as evaluator of IHOC (Improving Health Outcomes for Children) project. This grant, sponsored by the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), was based on a statewide and regional collaboration between the University of Southern Maine, Maine’s DHHS, Maine’s Center for Disease Control, University of Vermont and Vermont’s Medicaid program. As part of her work, Dr. Winton assisted with an evaluation of the First STEPS (Strengthening Together Early Prevention Services) learning initiative.

In recent years, Dr. Winton worked at Saint Joseph’s College as the Director of Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) and Associate Professor where she provided program oversight, supervised faculty, and conducted program evaluations. Her experience involved researching best practices in high-impact educational initiatives and overseeing curriculum development, including management of the Criminal Justice and Human Services academic minors at the college.

Dr. Winton earned a Master of Science in Counselor Education from the University of Maine in Orono, a Master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine and in 2013 she earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Maine in Orono. She also has specialized in advanced coursework in organizational leadership and literacy education.
