CHARLES H SHERMAN

1877. Charles H born in IN, black race (1910 Census).

1903. C H Sherman owned 80 acres, S 1/2 of NE 1/4 Sec 23 Joyfield Twp Benzie Co (1903 Atlas).

1910. Census of Frankfort MI Benzie Co indicated: Charles H age 33, lived alone (Soundex e5/f11).

1915. Charles H a farmer, PO Benzonia MI, owned 80 acres, S 1/2 of NE 1/4 Sec 23 Joyfield Twp Benzie Co (1915 Atlas).

DANIEL SHERMAN

1828. Daniel born in NY, father born in "unreadable" and mother in NY (1870/80 Censuses). (Gen Ref: Not in SD, DWS).

1863. Daniel, from NY state, first settler in Inland Twp Benzie Co, where he built a house, the floors where made from slabs split from basswood logs and smoothed off with an adz, the roof was of the same material (PMHC v31p134/41). From 1863/69 them area was called North Climax, and then called Inland since 1869 (MI Place Names by Romig p284).

1863. Daniel settled in Sec 13 of Inland Twp Benzie Co. The same year he sent for his sons Clark and Elmer who also settled there. He was the first Supervisor of Inland Twp. (MPHC v31p135/41).

1863/64. Daniel had a stage line, he drove the first team through to Manistee and carried several soldiers. The horses were driven one ahead of the other. (MPHC v31p135/41).

1867. Daniel was on the group of five men who built the first school house in the area; his son Elmer attended (MPHC v31p135/41).

1870. Census of Inland Twp Benzie Co indicated: Daniel age 42, farmer; Louisa Sherman age 43, born 1827; children Elmer, Clark; Horace A Slarrow age 17, born 1853 in NY (p24/d11/f11).

1880. Census of Inland Twp Benzie Co indicated: Daniel age 52, mill owner and weaver (uc); Kate Sherman age 25, born 1855 [2nd wife]; child Clark; Lafayette Brelison age 40, born 1840, single, laborer; Julianna (male) Tuthill age 37, born 1843, single, shore man (p28/d226/f226).

1883. D Sherman of Inland MI Benzie Co, a lumber mnfr (1883 MI Gaz p925). 2 Children:

1. Clark Sherman born 1853 in NY, came to MI in 1863.

2. Elmer Sherman born 1859 in NY, came to MI in 1863.
