Sherman Joins Foothill-De Anza as Vice Chancellor of Technology

Fred Sherman, a respected statewide leader in information technology who has held positions in two California community colleges and chaired the system's Technology Standards Committee, joined Foothill-De Anza Oct. 2 as vice chancellor of technology. He will oversee the district's Educational Technology Services (ETS) department.

"I'm excited to be part of a first-class educational institution here at Foothill-De Anza," said Sherman. "I look forward to working with the excellent faculty and staff in order to keep the district at the forefront of educational technology and provide a technologically rich learning environment for our students."

"We are pleased to have found a leader of Dr. Sherman's caliber to fill this critical position," said Chancellor Martha J. Kanter. "He brings extensive experience and many significant accomplishments to his new role. With open source and new forms of Web- and media-delivered courses available to our students, and as we prepare for wireless campuses, Foothill-De Anza is ready to move in new directions under his leadership."

Prior to accepting his current position, Sherman served for 10 years as vice president of information services and technology for the Butte-Glenn Community College District in Oroville. Among other notable achievements, Sherman led the team that won the California Virtual Campus (CVC) contract to manage distance education support activities for the California Community Colleges (CCC) system. He also led the CCC Technology Center, funded by a state grant to provide fiscal management, research, coordination and project management services to support the digital infrastructure for the state's 109 community colleges.

From 1992-1996, Sherman held the position of director of information services for Barstow Community College District. Previously, he worked for 13 years as an engineer and manager at General Dynamics in Pomona. He also has experience teaching at the college level and was an active- and reserve-duty officer in the U.S. Army. He has been an active community member and received numerous professional awards and honors. He is currently president-elect of the Chief Information Systems Officers' Association (CISOA) for California Community Colleges.

Sherman earned a Ph.D. in management information systems and an M.B.A. in financial/econometric analysis, both from Claremont Graduate University; an M.S. in systems management from the University of Southern California; and a B.S. in applied sciences and engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
