1804. Nathan and Polly moved from the town of Winfield in Herkimer Co NY to the town of Pamelia in Jefferson Co NY, which is about 12 miles N of Watertown NY on SR-37. It is not clear if they moved to the town of Pamelia or the township of Pamelia: In NY state townships are called towns.

1812. During the war of 1812 they lived near a blockhouse to which the children were taken whenever there was a rumor the British were coming.

1850. Census of LeRay Town/Twp of Jefferson Co NY indicates: Nathan Cole age 72, farmer, $2,500 real estate owned, born MA; Polly Cole age 69, born in MA (p128/d343/f349); Chauncey Cole age 37, born in NY; Esther Cole age 35, born in NY; Elimira Cole age 17, born in NY; Sanford Cole age 15, born in NY; Serena Cole age 13, born in NY; Pembroke Cole age 8, born in NY; Raselus [Rassealus] age 7, born in NY; James Oscar Cole age 5, born in NY; June Cole age 4, born in NY; Leona B Cole age 11/12, born in NY (p128/d343/f350). Chauncey is Nathan's son and Esther is Chauncey's wife. Sanford, James Oscar & June are probably Chauncey & Esther's children, but are not confirmed by a second source as the other children are.

1854. Aug 8th, Polly Cole (Cole) died, buried in SanfordCornerCemetery in Jefferson Co NY, which is about 8 miles N of Watertown NY on US-11.

1861. Jul 8th, Nathan died, buried in SanfordCornerCemetery.

Eden is only 12 miles S of Norwich ON where Emeline Cole and William R Sherman were married: Emeline is the daughter of Charles's brother Silas (See child number 8 above). 5 Children:

Note. The 1880 Co Map of San Fran Twp Carver Co MN shows a W Cole and a William Cole in sections 20, 29 & 30, which is about 15 miles E of Norwood MN on the MN River. <Check 1870, 1875 & 1880 censuses to confirm this is the correct person>.

Also on the above 1880 map, in sections 4,5 & 8 in Young America Twp in Carver Co MN is a Nathaniel Cole family (relationship unknown), this is 2 miles W and 1 mile N of Norwood MN.

The 1870, 1875 & 1880 censuses indicate: Nathaniel Cole farmer, born 1815 in CT, both parents born in CT; Mary Cole born 1818 in OH; Silas Cole born 1849 in IN; Martha Cole born 1852 in IN; Emily Cole born 1857 in MN; Ida Cole born 1858 in MN; Emma Cole born 1860 in MN; Jured Cole born 1802 in CT, both parents born in CT; Orpha Cole born 1809 in CT. It is possible Nathaniel & Jured are brothers.

A 1882 Carver Co History indicates Nathaniel Cole came from Warwick Co IN in 1856 and had a brother named Alfred Cole that lived near by. In 1859 Nathaniel was elected as Justice of the Peace for the town of Young America. In 1858 a John Cole was elected constable for the town of Watertown MN. (Copy at Carver Co Historical Society, 119 Cherry St, WaconiaMN55387).

c1814. Silas Cole was born in Town/Twp of Pamelia in Jefferson Co NY, The town is located about 10 miles NW of Watertown NY (JCB).

1820+.Much of the following information about Silas Cole will not apply, but at this time it is research material to help find his location(s) from 1820 on, and his place and date of death.

1820. Census Index indicates a Silas Cole in OH (LDS/AIS).

c1830. Silas and Lucy were married.

1830. Census Index indicates a Silas Cole in CT, MA, NH, OH, PA & VT (LDS/AIS).

1830/50. Silas Cole does not appear in the Land Record Index or the Biographical and Genealogical Index of the Archives Of ON (letter from Archives, Oct 13 1988).

1834. Oct 12th, daughter Emeline Cole born in NY (1870 & 1900 Censuses) or in Canada (1880 Census), see below.

1840. Census index of New YorkState lists two Silas Coles: (1) LeRay Town/Twp in Jefferson Co (LDS/AIS p26), and (2) Wales Town/Twp in Erie Co (LDS/AIS p297). Neither were listed earlier in the 1830 or later in the 1850 census index. There were also Silas Coles listed in CT, IN, MA, NH, OH, PA, RI, & VT (LDS/AIS). <check Tuscola Co MI>.

1840. Census of LeRay Town/Twp Jefferson Co NY indicated a Silas Cole family: The age groups in the census matched Silas, his wife Lucy, and 4 oldest children named Benjamin, Emeline, Charlotte and Willard (p26).

1840. Census of Tuscola Co MI indicated no Silas Cole. Census of Lapeer Twp (all of the NW corner of county) Lapeer Co indicates no Silas Cole, but a Rueben Cole family with 8 males and 2 females (p20).

1841. <Check censuses for Oxford & Elgin Counties ON.

1845. <check census for State Census, Tuscola Co MI>.

1847. Son Alfred born in Michigan (1870, 1880 & 1910 Censuses below).

1847/66. Silas's brother Charles Grandison Cole lived near the village of Eden in Elgin Co ON, after which they returned to the US (100 acres, N 1/2 of Lot 25 Concession IX Bayham Twp Elgin Co). Eden is only 12 miles S of Norwich ON where Silas' daughter Emeline Cole and William R Sherman were married.

1848/55. Apparently they lived in West Canada (Ontario) as some of their children were born there, Lucy Cole born 1848 and Willard Cole born 1855 (1860 Census of Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI).

1850. Triplets were born, they died young (JCB).

1850. Morality Schedule for MI had 9 Coles, but no Silas.

1850. Census Index for MI indicates no Silas Cole in the State, but in Washington Twp Macomb Co it indicates a Lucy M Cole on p137. <check census for Lucy>.

1850. Census index indicated there were Silas Coles in the states of IN, MA, MI (Cass Co) MO, NH, OH, PA and RI (LDS/AIS). Check of actual censuses indicated all were the wrong family.

1850. The following census was interesting because of the given names, but wrong family. Census of Stark Twp Coos Co NH indicated: Silas Cole age 35, farmer; Lucy M Cole age 35; Emeline Cole age 14; Fanny Cole age 11; Ralph [unclear] Cole age 9; Seth Cole age 6; Lucinda Cole age 3; all born in NH (p140/d117/f48).

1850. Censuses of Tuscola Co & Lapeer Co indicated no Silas or Lucy Cole. It is believed they lived in ON, near the border of Oxford and ElginCounties, near Tillsonburg.

1854. Mar 21st, daughter Emeline Cole married William R Sherman in Canada, could have been in Norwich Twp in Oxford Co where William was born and raised. Emeline's mother Lucy Steele (Cole) was a witness. No knowledge that the Cole's lived here, but it is likely they at least lived nearby. Silas's brother Charles Grandison Cole lived in Eden about 12 miles S of Norwich in Elgin Co ON.

1854. MI Census index of Pokagan Twp, Cass Co, MI indicates a Silas Cole (LDS/AIS). Wrong person. See 1850 above.

1854. Sep, their son Hugh Cole was born in West Canada (1900 Census below for Hugh).

1854. Oct 26th, Alinas Cole settled in Akron Twp Tuscola Co (1883/h). Relationship unknown. See 1858 item below.

1857. May 8th, William & Emeline's son Alonzo was born in Blandford Twp in Oxford Co ON.

1858. Jul 15th, A [Alinas] H Cole was chairman of the Council that organized the FirstBaptistChurch in Tuscola Co (1883/h). See the 1854 item above.

1859. Hugh Cole, their son age 4 years who was born in Canada West, immigrated to US (1900 Census of Elba Town/Twp Lapeer Co MI (p107/d112/f121): Probably immigrated with his mother.

1860. Census of Tuscola Co & Lapeer Co indicated no Silas Cole.

1860. Census of Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI indicated: Edward Woodrow age 70, farmer, born PA, $14,000 real & $571 personal property [uc]; Lucy Woodrow age 48 [aka Lucy Cole], keeping house, born in NY; John Woodrow age 24, farmer, born in Canada West; Mary Cole age 12, born in Canada West; Hugh Cole age 5, born in Canada West (p697/d457/f449). See 1870 census below.

1860. Silas Cole was either dead or divorced, which could have happened after the conception/birth of his youngest child in 1855 in ON and before July 1st 1860 when Lucy is shown married to Edward Woodrow and living in Lapeer Co MI. There are no death records for Silas Cole in Tuscola Co MI or Lapeer Co MI, so if he died it was probably in ON.

1860+. There was no Silas Cole shown on the maps of Tuscola Co (1875/map; 1888/map; 1902/map).

1861. S Cole, born USA, Baptist, single (1861 Census, Bayham Twp Elgin Co Ontario, div 5 page 10). This person is unknown.

1862/65. Internal Revenue Assessment Lists for Tuscola Co MI indicated no Silas Cole (IRAS).

1864. <Check MI census, Tuscola Co>.

1870. Census of Watertown Twp in Tuscola Co MI indicated a Lucy Woodrow age 55 [aka Lucy Cole], without occupation, born in NY, she could not read or write (p14/d113/f112). She was living with William R & Emeline Sherman, and is Emeline's mother Lucy Steele (Cole) (Woodrow). See 1860 census of Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI above.

1870.Census of Tuscola Co MI indicates no Silas Cole.

1870. Census of Young American Twp in Carver Co MN indicates a Silas Cole (p304/d17/f17). This is a 21-year-old son living with his parents, not the right Silas Cole.

1874. No Coles in Deerfield, Marathon or Rich Twps in Lapeer Co (1874/map). <check Attica Co Lapeer Co>.

1875. Lucy Steele (Cole) (Woodrow) died, and is buried in grave 1 lot 394 old Watertown Cemetery (cem/WT). TUS/DR not found. Margie Cole Greene (who is Alfred Cole's granddaughter) said Lucy Steele (Cole) (Woodrow) is the Lucy "Mother" buried with Alfred Cole and family in lot 394. <check Lapeer Co for death record>.

1881. Census of E Oxford Twp S Oxford Co ON indicated: Edward (uc) Woodrow age 83, widow, farmer, born in ON, W Methodist, English origin; living with William & Ann Bertrem family (p65-66/d237/f243).

1883. Silas Cole not mentioned in the History of Tuscola Co (1883/h).

1888. No Coles in Watertown Twp (1888/map).

1877. Atlas of Bayham Twp indicated an S Ostrander, just E of Eden, in Lot 24 Concession IX.

1882. Feb 10th, Charlotte Ostrander, an adult, was Baptized by Minister John Wilson at the JeffersonAveMethodistChurch in SaginawMI (Saginaw Timerlog Spring 1977 Vol V Issue 3).

1889. Nov 5th, Simeon Ostrander a merchant of the town of Tillsonburg in the Co of Oxford in the Province of Ontario, and Charlotte A Ostrander his wife, sold 50 acres in Bayham Twp Elgin Co to William Chandler of Bayham Twp, for sum of $1,450 (W 1/2 of S 1/2 of Lot 24 Concession IX Bayham Twp Elgin Co ON) (Elgin Co Land Record 10,281).

1894. Census of Port Huron Ward 6 indicated a Charlotte Ostrander lived with Albert & Fred W Ostrander. <Get actual census>.
