JOB TITLE: Chemist-Toxicologist

DEPARTMENT: Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab

HOURS: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Occasional Weekends

Monday - Friday

Based on 26 Pay Periods

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Chemistry, Biochemistry or other natural science from an accredited four-year college or university. Graduate degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience is required. Applicant must have knowledge of instrumental analytical chemistry techniques including Gas Chromatography, HPLC, and Mass Spectroscopy. Previous working knowledge in an organization having a formal quality management system is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required; as well as the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.Computer literacy in the use of Microsoft Office applications is preferred. Must be detail oriented, organized and able to effectively communicate both written and verbally. Position also requires objectivity, a high degree of independent judgment, the ability to conduct root cause analysis, and basic statistical skills. Familiarity with compliance management software and case management software such as JusticeTrax is preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience performing independent forensic analyses on Controlled Substance specimens and/or Blood Alcohol/Drug specimens.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs chemical analyses of tablets, powders, liquids and plant material to identify controlled and non-controlled substances as well as dangerous drugs. Performs blood alcohol and/or blood drug testing. Prepares written reports to support the analytical findings and provides testimony as an expert witness in legal proceedings. Performs technical reviews of casework. Participates in training, competency testing and proficiency testing as required. Operates and maintains laboratory instruments. Actively participates in quality assurance and quality control activities in the laboratory; assists in preparing the laboratory for accreditation; conducts or assists in conducting quality and process improvement activities; assists in maintaining the compliance management software program; writes, revises, reviews and formats relevant procedures and manuals; assists in conducting internal audits; participates in quality improvement projects; maintains awareness of technical developments in the laboratory; and assists with open records requests. Employee follows all established protocols and procedures; maintains a safe and orderly work area; and may be assigned other tasks as deemed necessary.

Lifts 40-lbs, stoops, bends, and reaches as required. Occasionally, may be exposed indirectly to biological samples and laboratory chemical fumes.
