Shakespeare Syllabus—Dr. Carey 2009-10

Course Overview:

This course is intended to explore the world of William Shakespeare, English Renaissance dramatic literature, and the role of the English theatre in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. We will read a selection of his plays, watch clips from film versions of his plays, and experiment with Elizabethan/Jacobean acting techniques. In addition, we will explore the social, economic, religious, political, and environmental factors influencing the time period. The student will engage with the material through reading, writing, listening, and discussing. In this way, the student will build and improve his/her reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing composition skills. The material presented in this course will be designed to address Georgia’s adopted Curriculum Standards.

Grading:

10% participation

35% homework, in-class assignments, quizzes

35% tests and formal presentations

20% final exam

Materials:

Various paperback plays will be issued. ($12.00 each to replace if lost/damaged)

College-ruled loose leaf paper; one-subject spiral notebook for taking notes; black ink pen; folder with

pockets to keep paper, handouts and returned papers.

If a text is lost, stolen, or destroyed, the student will need to pay for it before a new text can be issued.

Classroom Expectations:

·  Arrive on time each day. Attendance will be taken each day. I will follow the county and school’s policy for attendance and tardiness. Please refer to the 2009-10 Parent Handbook for more information.

·  Come to class prepared with completed assignments and necessary materials.

·  Come to class each day seeking to learn something new.

·  Come to class each day in the proper attire, following the school’s dress code policy.

·  Support and honor your fellow classmates and embrace new ideas.

·  Do not bring food/drink/candy/gum or electronic devices into the classroom.

·  Academic honesty will be held in the highest esteem. Cheating, plagiarism, lying, and stealing will not be tolerated. Please see the English department Course Policies for more information.
