JOB DESCRIPTION- SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTER INTERN

The Sexual Assault Center provides internship opportunities to students enrolled in human services programs. Interns will increase both their knowledge of community resources and their understanding of the effects of sexual violence on victims as well as the community.

TIME REQUIREMENT: Minimum of two hotline shift per month, in addition to regularly scheduled office hours. Amount of office hours varies according to specific program of study.

HELPFUL SKILLS: Interpersonal skills in listening, providing feedback and problem solving. Good oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of community resources helpful, but not required.

DUTIES OF INTERN:

Office coverage/Hotline coverage

¨  Assist in answering calls received in The Sexual Assault Center

¨  Assist with follow-up calls to advocates and clients

¨  Provide general information and/or supportive counseling in-person or over the phone

¨  Other duties as needed

¨  Assist in coverage of 24-hour hotline (minimum of 2 shifts per month)

Medical Advocacy:

¨  Provide information on the importance of medical attention for the victim regarding her/his physical health, the possibility of contracting venereal disease, AIDS, and the possibility of pregnancy resulting from rape.

¨  Discuss importance of protecting the evidence in case a police report is made now or later.

¨  Meet victim at emergency treatment center, if desired by victim.

¨  Prepare victim for medical treatment and/or evidence collection by informing her/him of process.

¨  Remain with victim during exam if this is her/his wish or remain with family or friends.

Legal Advocacy:

¨  Discuss option of reporting assault to police if caller is 18 years or over, if she/he has not already done so.

¨  Remain with victim through questioning, if victim desires.

¨  Prepare and support the victim for legal process.

¨  Keep in contact with police and victim witness about progress of case; keep victim informed.

¨  Accompany victim to court proceedings and meetings at DA's office.

¨  Help to emotionally prepare victim for testimony.

¨  Provide support for victim during court proceedings and possible trial.

Follow-up Contact/ Support Services:

¨  Continue contact with victim and/or family as long as she/he desires.

¨  Provide written reports to SAC and keep coordinator informed of case progress.
