Seventh Grade MathCourse Syllabus

Course Instructor: Ms. Kimberly Wilson

Hello! Welcome to Honors seventh grade math. I am excited to start a new year with all of you as we learn and discover math together. Seventh grade is a transition class. We will continue to learn and use fractions, decimals, and percents as well as discover new types of numbers. We will begin the exploration of algebra, continue to learn geometry, and learn about probability.

What will be expected of you as a student?

I have two expectations in my classroom: every student will respect others and their property and students will not impede the learning of others. If I see any behaviors that are not consistent with these two expectations, I will pull the students out to talk to them about their behavior. On the third occasion, I will give them a detention and a notification will be sent home to the parents/guardians. If the behavior is not changed after the detention, then the parents, the student, and I will sit down and discuss a plan so that the behavior changes. All of my students have two responsibilities in regards to their own education: complete the assignments/tasks that I ask of them and ask questions when they are struggling.

What are the Teacher’s Goals for This Class?

I strongly believe in setting goals for myself and I would ask you to join me in creating goals for yourselves this school year. My hope is that by the end of the year your ability to problem solve will increase, you will gain confidence in approaching an unknown math problem, and that you will gain a greater appreciation for math.

Assignments and Grading:

Every week I will assign a weekly set of homework problems for you to do to practice the content that we have been covering in class. All homework is due the first day of class on the following week.Students receive participation points by taking notes, sharing applicable comments, and participating in activities/tasks during class. Students lose points by interacting negatively with others. Every Friday that we meet we will have a quiz or test. I do allow my students to redo quizzes and tests if they don’t do well, but they have to complete extra work which will be provided for them, before they can reattempt the quiz or test. We will also do one project per semester. The breakdown of grades will be as follows:

10% Homework

10% Participation

30% Quizzes

30% Tests

20% Project

*Since this is an Honors class all students will be expected to maintain a grade of 77% or above. If students cannot pull their grade up within two weeks of the initial drop in grade, they will be transferred to a lower level class. *

Materials you will need for this Course:

A folder, a pencil, and a notebook. Textbooks and other materials will be provided for you.

Absences and Tardies:

Work that is missed due to unexcused absences cannot be made up. If you do have an excused absence, then it is your responsibility to make sure that you have make up the required work. If you are absent on a day in which homework is due, then you must turn it into me BEFORE we go over it in class. If you are absent on a day in which we have a quiz or test, then you will do the test the first day you get back. If a student is tardy more than 3 times that students will receive a detention.
