Service Program 2017-2018
Description:
Service, one of the four pillars, is a large part of our Dominican spirituality and charism. Past and present Dominican women and men meditate on the life of Jesus and work to give the fruits of this contemplation to others. As an Adrian Dominican school we are also called to this mission. We follow the footsteps of women and men who, like St. Catherine of Siena, responded to the Gospel by being of service to others. The purpose of service in a Catholic school is twofold: to complete acts of charity for one’s neighbor because we are called to this by God to act as Jesus and figures in our Dominican heritage, and to be transformed by the service through theological reflection on the experience. To affirm the many hours of contributed servicesthat Regina Dominican provides to support the local, national, and global community, we moved to a mandatory service-hour requirement beginning in the 2016-2017 school year and will continue this year.
All students will be required to complete at least 15 hours of service each school year due by April 15th. The students will be required to do service in different areas each year, moving progressively outward towards neighbor and larger communities. Service hours should be completed as an individually created project for the benefit of others, or as part of a larger non-profit organization. Hours working at for-profit business will not be accepted.
- Freshmen- 15 hours of service to family and/or school community
- Sophomores- 15 hours of service to school and local community (family hours no longer accepted towards goal)
- Juniors- 15 hours of service to community (school and family hours no longer accepted towards goal)
- Seniors- 15 hours of service to local and global community (school and family hours no longer accepted towards goal)
We will use the extension of the online Naviance program called X2Vol, to track service hours. All past service hours are currently in the system already, and then yearly goals will be set for each class. This is a self-service experience for the students: they input all information themselves including hours, site contact and theological reflection, their site contact will approve their hours electronically, and these will either be approved or rejected by the Campus Minister. After April 15th of each school year, each student’s Theology teacher will logon to Naviance and check for completion of the student’s hours in the appropriate area of service and the theological reflection essay. Students will be able to track their own progress throughout the year, see when/if their hours are approved, and even print reports in various areas to send to colleges, for example. All information is updated in real-time.
***Moderators of groups such as NHS, student council, etc. can be made administrators on the Naviance X2Vol site and can set and require a service-hour goal for the students in their organization.***
