POSITION TITLE: Service Line Director, Oncology

DEPARTMENT: Nursing Administration

Position Summary:

Responsible for strategic and operational leadership for the Oncology service line. Provides oversight of the development of business, financial, personnel, and marketing plans that foster growth, while meeting patient and provider expectations. Possesses overall managerial responsibility for all aspects of Oncology services and is accountable for the operational performance, including quality of services, financial performance and competitive market position. Works closely with Medical Director to collaborate on advancing clinical outcomes and efficiency. Ensures all functions are in compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines and accrediting standards. Represents the Oncology service line withinHealth System and the communities served. Observes and practices within the framework of the scope and standards for nurse administrators.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration or Nursing required. Masters Degree in Nursing or Business preferred. Five years experience in middle or higher level management. Relevant experience in oncology is strongly preferred.
  1. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS: Excellent communication skills to include business plan

preparation. Capable of conducting return on investment (ROI) analysis. Strong physician relations

exemplified by follow-up, meeting attendance and effective negotiating skills. Fiscal acumen

demonstrated by development of annual budgets reflecting capital acquisition planning, staffing and

operational expenses.

  1. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS: Appropriate professional licensure in

the states ofIllinois and Iowa, if required.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

A. WORKERS SUPERVISED: Registered nurses, radiation therapy technicians, physicists, nursing assistants, clerical staff, and cancer registrars.

C. INTER-RELATIONSHIPS: Physicians, hospital personnel, patients,

visitors, and community agencies

WORKING CONDITIONS:

. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases

. Potential exposure to the risk of blood borne pathogens Category II

. May be exposed to toxic chemicals

. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances

. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations

. Handles emergency or crisis situations

. Subject to long or irregular hours

. Occasional travel required

. Requires judgement/action which could result in serious consequences

. Handles absentee replacement on short notice

demands

. Works in a smoke-free environment

. Occasional exposure to video display terminal

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

. Light physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs)

. Occasional prolonged standing/walking

. Occasionally lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients

. Occasionally lifts supplies/equipment

. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching

. Necessitates frequent verbal and written communication

RESPONSIBILITIS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

I. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT:

  • Displays knowledge of current and future direction of areas of cancer treatment especially as it relates to the application of new technology and innovations.
  • Serves as a resource to senior management on strategic issues impacting the Oncology service line.
  • Prepares and implements strategic plan.
  • Monitors and reports achievement of strategic and operational goals.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adaptable to rapidly changing health care environment.
  • Demonstrates and promotes systems thinking.
  • Establishes standards of job performance and holds staff accountable.
  • Keeps management team, physicians and staff informed of changes which impact the current and future delivery of services.
  • Ensures competent staff.

II. SAFETY AND QUALITY:

  • Exhibits strong commitment to patient care and high quality services and outcomes.
  • Serves as a strong customer advocate.
  • Possesses knowledge and ensures compliance with organizational and regulatory standards, ie. National Patient Safety Goals, Joint Commission, infection control practices, and other state and federal regulations.
  • Provides safe environment for employees to perform their work.
  • Provides administrative direction to improve performance, based on monitoring and reporting of short and long term outcomes.
  • Serves as a liaison for physicians, providers, families, and patients.
  • Demonstrates prompt and immediate follow-up of all untoward events and/or negative outcomes occurring within the Oncology service line.

III. SERVICE:

  • Monitors patient satisfaction with services.
  • Monitors survey results. Communicates results to employees and explores ways to improve satisfaction with care and services.
  • Maintains visibility and ongoing dialogue with physicians to address issues.
  • Communicates effectively with employees. Creates an environment conducive to the development of clinical competence, self-confidence, professional growth, and job satisfaction.
  • Compliant with Human Resources departmental policies and procedures consistently and fairly.
  • Monitors and minimizes employee’s turnover.
  • Represents the Oncology service line on various hospital, affiliate hospital and community committees.

  1. FINANCIAL:
  • Collaborates with Financial Services to develop a realistic budget.
  • Directs business development to enhance the financial stability of the Oncology service line.
  • Provides advice and recommendations in the capital budget planning process.
  • Monitors supply expenses. Works with management team to resolve variances.
  • Demonstrates innovation in the development and implementation of cost reduction strategies.
  • Monitors productivity to ensure a balance of fiscal responsibility to provision of services to patients and physicians.
  • Performs marketing services and encourages participation in community needs assessments, educational programs, health screenings and promotion of overall health and wellness resulting in a clear/positive public image of Oncology services for physicians and community.
  • Promotes delivery of outreach programs and services to meet the needs of smaller communities and outlying regions.
