Guardian ad Litem

Purpose of Agency: Every five minutes a child is abused or neglected in North Carolina. In Mecklenburg county around 15,700 children are thrust into the court system through no fault of their own. Some are victims of violence, psychological torment or sexual abuse. Others have been neglected or even abandoned by their own parents. Most of them are confused and all of them are frightened. Although the numbers are staggering, the Guardian ad Litem program provides an opportunity for people to make a difference. You serve as a trained advocate in court by getting to know the child and the child’s case and by preparing a written report to help the judge understand what is best for the child and to ultimately find them a safe, permanent home.

Students volunteering with our organization can serve as Guardians to abused and neglected children by advocating for their best interest in court.
