Who is this Sequence for?

This task has been written for students in the latter part of Year 1. Students should be familiar with numbers up to 100, including skills to count a collection of objects up to this magnitude. It presumes that students have experience in skip counting, both verbal and physical. Students will benefit from skip counting experiences from zero and non-zero starting points.

Summary of Learning Goals

This task builds students ability to unitise a group as they use skip counting strategies. Unitising requires students to make a shift from seeing and counting individual items to recognising and counting groups. For example, when skip counting by 5s, students shift to seeing five individual ones as one group of five. Creating equal sized groups allows students to count groups rather than by ones.

Summary of Lesson

This task presents students with a picture of a large number of birds sitting on telegraph wires. They are asked to work out how many birds are in the picture. Students are then encouraged to consider efficient counting strategies and to recount the collection by grouping birds and using skip counting strategies.
