The Opportunity

TEP is seeking to recruit an experiencedHistoric Environment Specialist. This is a permanent full-time post, ideally based in our Market Harborough Office, but could work from any of our other offices in Warrington, Gateshead or London; working as part of our Heritage Team.

The Heritage Team works on a wide range of schemes ranging from assessments of small sites and single assets through to environmental impact assessments for large linear infrastructure. Some projects are ‘stand-alone’ within the Heritage Team whilst many are part of commissions involving a range of TEP’s specialists.

Recent notable projects include:

  • Advice to HS2 on effects on the historic environment
  • Historic environment assessments for proposed large overhead line projects in Somerset and Cumbria
  • EIA for a new link road in Merseyside and Cheshire
  • Expert evidence for public inquiries into wind farm expansion, former quarry regeneration and infrastructure projects

The Role

An opportunity has become available to support the increasingly expanding work in the team and take the day-to-day lead on projects that include the assessment of buried archaeological remains, historic landscapes and built heritage effects including their settings.

The role will entail the management and production of historical environment reports, specifying and managing archaeological mitigation measures andliaising with clients on their requirements to secure necessary consents including planning permission, listed building consent and scheduled monument consent and discharging planning conditions.

The role will also support the wider activity of the Heritage Team including supporting its historic environment work, technically reviewing others’ reports, supporting the development of more junior staff and business development.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Relevantfirstdegreein archaeology, heritage or a related subject, or experience equivalent to this:
  • Competency inwriting historic environment desk-based assessments and heritage statements
  • Experience in engagement with statutory authorities and clients
  • Understanding of the planning process (including EIA) and fully up-to-date with the relevant environmental/heritage legislation and guidance;
  • Experience in securing relevant consents and discharging conditions
  • Good analytical skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Computer literacy in MS Office, specifically Excel and Word
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Experience of bidding for work
  • Experience of managing staff and resourcing within a small team
  • Able to work well alone and also as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workload and work to deadlines (good time management) in a consultancy environment
  • Full driving licence

Desirable:

  • Good knowledge of archaeological assessment
  • Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) or relevant Institute (or able to demonstrate eligibility)
  • Experience of specifying and managing archaeological contracts
  • Experience of ArcGIS
  • Technical report quality assurance
  • Experience of archaeological standing building recording
  • Experience of writing ES chapters

Remuneration

TEP offers a competitive salary and benefits package, consistent with the CIfA salary minima. Salary will be negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
