Senior High Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleading Requirements

  1. Students, regardless of sex or race, are eligible if they meet the following requirements:
  1. They must meet the grade qualifications required by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association
  2. A cheerleader must have passed a minimum load of work during the preceding semester to be eligible at any time during the present semester. However, if the cheerleader passes a minimum load for the year, the record during the spring semester shall be immaterial to the cheerleader’s status during the following fall semester.
  1. The head cheerleader for the varsity and junior varsity squads will be chosen from among their membership.
  2. Planned efforts should be carried out to encourage all students to volunteer for tryouts.
  3. All cheerleaders will be required to take out school insurance.
  4. The principal is responsible for approving written policies covering the following items:
  1. Attendance policy – Cheerleaders are expected to attend all activities in which they are involved.
  2. Transportation of cheerleaders – transportation must be approved for all events. Cheerleaders are required to use the transportation provided by the school administration.
  3. Time of year for the selection of cheerleaders
  4. Details concerning how cheerleaders are to be disciplined for missing practice, conduct, and any usual type of behavior or conditions.
  5. Uniforms will be left to the discretion of the individual school. Uniform cost should be kept to a minimum.

  7. Cheerleader sponsor duties and responsibilities
  1. A cheerleader shall not be a member of the cheerleader squad and an athletic team during the same sport season, unless agreed upon by both coaches.
  2. Cheerleader camps will not be made mandatory or required for election and cheerleaders will not be pressured into attending camps. However, it is felt camps on a volunteer basis are beneficial in the following ways:
  1. To teach and share the most worthwhile and effective cheerleading techniques.
  2. To promote self-improvement, insight, and dedication to the highest personal, as well as cheerleading standards.
  3. To give the inexperienced cheerleader an opportunity to discover what it is all about and to learn safety techniques and cheering techniques.
  4. To get new ideas, new cheers and new ways to promote good sportsmanship.
  1. If cheerleader squads do attend camp, the coach will be required to make reservations and provide school transportation for one squad.
  2. Cheer guidelines
  1. Cheers shall be to promote or to create enthusiasm with your crowd and shall not be to put the other crowd or team down.
  2. There shall not be any cheers which include derogatory gestures, language, or anything offensive, such as pointing at opposing crowd or team, booing, using foul language, or using “YOU’ or “BOY”.
  3. Their fans but control them should not intimidate the cheerleaders. If the crowd should start offensive cheers, the cheerleaders are expected to use all attempts to discourage it.
  4. Cheers should be short and effective
  5. Cheerleaders may want to provide the cheers in written form, for example, via student handbook.

10. Pyramids – The building of pyramids and the use of partner stunts should follow the guidelines set forth in the NCHSAA Handbook.

11. Gymnastics Equipment – No gymnastics apparatus such as a mini tramp will be used.

Guidelines for Cheerleaders

  1. The position of the cheerleader in athletics should be kept in perspective. The game is the primary consideration.
  2. The cheerleader will promote good sportsmanship.
  3. You are to welcome the visiting cheerleaders and make the, feel at home.
  4. Learn the rules and terms for each sport.
  5. Don’t use cheers that ridicule the opposing team, players, or referees.
  6. Don’t imitate or join in boos, whistles, or cat-calls.
  7. Keep your cheers short and peppy.
  8. Regulations for cheerleaders at basketball games.
  1. Remain seated when ball is in play (front row of bleachers – not on floor)
  2. Cheerleaders shall only lead organized cheers at the times indicated below:

Before the game

Between quarters

During called time-outs

At the end of the game

During dead ball situations

Basketball games only – the visiting team will have the floor at the first time-out.

The second time-out the home team will have the floor. The squads will alternate thereafter. After the court cheer has been completed, the other squad may stand at their bench for chants. The squads must be seated before play begins in the court.

  1. Areas are to be marked in all gyms for home and visiting cheerleaders.

10. Cheerleaders are not to wear jewelry of any kind while cheering.
