Role Purpose
  1. To build student academic capabilities by providing academic learning support for undergraduate and post graduate students across Wintec.
  2. To show academic leadership by actively contribute to the academic currency and development of the team working in Student Learning Services.
  3. To develop and foster a positive and supportive learning environment by using effective teaching strategies and promoting learning consistent with student needs and professional standards.
  4. To contribute research and course development as required.

Employment Details
Location / The appointee will be basedat Hamilton City campus, but may be required to work at Rotokauri campus / Hamilton Gardens campus / Te Kuiti campus / Thames campus.

Teaching Quality / Facilitating Learning
Demonstrates challenging and inspiring teaching in a variety of contexts, and implements strategies that support students being independent learners and that address individual student learning needs.
Maintains up to date teaching and learning practices that are contextualised with the students’ course content. Shares this knowledge with colleagues.
Coaches others within Student Learning Services in quality teaching and learning strategies that are underpinned by sound educational theory and utilise a variety of technologies for blended learning opportunities.
Works collaboratively with the Team Manager and Operational Team Leader to ensure student feedback systems are in place and working effectively to ensure ongoing improvement of SLS delivery.
Planning and Preparation
Guides colleagues in planning and preparing current teaching resources, lesson plans, learning outcomes, effective blended delivery methods and effective assessment methods. Continually updates own practice.
Builds students’ academic capabilities by using strategies that encourage independence.
Expertise
Has expertise in teaching and learning, and is able to apply that learning to strategies for the team to enable learners with a wide range of requirements for additional support.
Works collaboratively with the Operational Team Leader to develop and maintain effective academic leadership and practice across the Student Learning Services Teaching Team.
Curriculum Development and Flexible Delivery Design
Coaches and works with staff in the development and facilitation of a range of approaches to student learning so that support can be appropriately tailored for groups and individuals.
Development / Reflective Practitioner
Regularly coaches and guides staff within Student Learning Services on reflective practitioner skills and activities and engages in critical reflection of own teaching and coaching practice.
Considers aspects such as diversity, international student experience, Māori learners and Treaty based practice, and encourages the application of these to teaching practices.
Professional Development
Engages in on-going professional development activities and applies the learnings to teaching practice and subject content, and coaches others to apply to their practices.
Is considered an expert in the team for professional development activities in teaching and/or subject area.
Participates in Wintec and other professional development opportunities in teaching and learning.
Academic Leadership / Peer Support and Academic Esteem
Provides developmental feedback in peer observation within Student Learning Services.
Coaches colleagues within the Student Learning Services in the development of teaching materials and resources, blended learning strategies, teaching technologies and internationalisation.
Is sought by colleagues within Wintec for expertise in subject area and/or teaching practices and/or academic management.
Contributes positively to Wintec’s reputation regionally.
Organisational Commitment / Assists with the development and implementation of Student Learning Services’ promotional activities.
Contributes as a member of Wintec committees and project teams as opportunities arise.
Coordinates and leads projects within Student Experience team e.g. research initiatives.

Research and Technology Transfer / Designs and carries out research and/or technology aligned to the Student Learning Services’ RDT plan and Wintec strategic priorities.

Disseminates research outcomes by publishing articles in relevant highly ranked journals and publications, presenting at teaching and learning conferences, and sharing results with the wider Wintec community.
Mentors colleagues through their research projects.
Health and safety management accountabilities are understood and applied. Individual and staff H&S outcome and objectives are reviewed at least annually. / Significant hazards in the area of responsibility are identified, documented and reviewed annually or as new hazards emerge. Significant hazards are eliminated, isolated and/or risk minimised. Staff in the area of responsibility are involved in the hazard management process. Relevant H&S training is identified and completed for key staff and those with specific job/training requirements. Competency Specification
Education / training / Postgraduate research qualification, preferably at Master’s level.
Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Education, teaching qualification or equivalent (e.g. NCALE), preferably from New Zealand.
Experience / Minimum of four years’ teaching experience at a senior level at a tertiary institute.
Experience in teaching and facilitating large groups of students.
Experience working with post graduate students.
Proficient with learning technologies e.g. Moodle, Blackboard to actively engage learners.
Experience and understanding in regard to culture, identity and learning in New Zealand.
Able to contextualise learning to the student’s discipline.
Typical knowledge, skills and attributes / Developed and effective leadership and coaching skills used across Wintec.
Proficient student-centered approach to teaching and learning (e.g. project based learning, work-based learning, e-learning).
Ability to work collegially in a team environment.
Significant and recent experience working as an Academic Learning Advisor or Senior Academic Learning Advisor within a tertiary institution.
Able to interact and be responsive to the needs of diverse groups, e.g. youth, Māori and Pasifika, and international students.
Able to exercise judgement in problem solving.
Highly developed interpersonal and relationship skills to work with colleagues to resolve issues and meet agreed outcomes.
Ability to identify and adapt new and emerging technologies.
Uses technology at an intermediate level including Microsoft Office products and social networking platforms.
