Discussion and research into the evolving culturally competent role of professional counselors in all settings, emphasizing ethical decision-making and licensure and certification considerations.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Gain understanding of the role of a counselor in addictions, school, and private practice settings.
- Utilize relevant literature to counseling practice.
- Become aware of current trends in the field of counseling, e.g. online counseling ethics.
- Understand licensure and certification requirements.
- Develop a basic understanding of ethical mistakes counselors make.
- Deepen understanding and practice of personal and professional wellness plans.

Suggestions for Getting the Most from the Course
- Read the contents of the syllabus. Ask necessary questions prior to class, during the first part of class, or during breaks.
- Select a presentation topic that you are passionate about or want to learn more about.
Academic Requirements and Evaluation
Course Requirements:
- Participation: all students are expected to attend class both Friday and Saturday, participate in discussions, and complete assignments 1 and 2.
- Complete assignments as directed in a timely and professional manner.
Assignment 1: Journal Article
Individually or in groups of TWO, select an article from a reputable journal (see list below for examples). Each group member will write a one-page summary and a one-page personal response to the article using APA format. Please pick an article regarding an aspect of your current/future counseling work that will be of interest to you, as your ability to respond in an interested and personal manner will be paramount to the scoring. Please include an APA-style reference citation for the article. The assignment will be due on Friday, April 7th.
Assignment 2: Class Presentation
Your group (or you as an individual) will present a summary of the article you selected as well as facilitate a class discussion of the issues presented in your article. Your presentation should be no less than 20 minutes and no more than 30. Presentations will be on both Friday and Saturday.

Participation: Your participation grade will be based on: (1) attending to and asking relevant questions of guest speakers and (2) asking relevant questions and constructive comments to your colleagues’ presentations.

Grading Criteria
97-100% = A+ 87-89% = B+ 77-79% = C+ 67-69% = D+Below 60 = F
93-96% = A 83-86% = B 73-76% = C 63-66% = D
90-92% = A- 80-82% = B- 70-72% = C- 60-62% = D-
Assignments not submitted when due or not in the assigned format will not earn full points. Those submitted more than three days past the due date will not be accepted. Plagiarism is sufficient grounds for failure for the course. See current Boise State Graduate Catalog for academic regulations and appeal procedures.
Given the nature of the course, missing more than 2 hours will result in a failing grade.
