Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and Collaborative for High Performance Schools
Brief Program Description: This program serves a wide variety of professionals involved in planning and implementing green building technologies and programs to improve K-12 facilities. Sessions will focus on three key integrated themes.
- economics: funding, life cycle costs, energy savings
- education and design: benefits, policy, planning
- environment and energy: renewable resources, student comfort, savings
Who should attend:
- K-12 educational leaders (administrators, school board members, other educators)
- architects, engineers, & design professionals
- construction professionals
- elected officials
- and others planning and implementing green building technologies and programs to improve K-12 education

Integrated Design for High Performance Green Schools and LEED®

- Understand the purpose and benefits of high performance green schools
- Become familiar with the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating System as a tool for producing green schools
- Gain both conceptual and concrete knowledge about integrated design, a process that is the key to producing cost-effective LEED and green schools
- Explore through case studies how construction costs for green schools can be neutralized through integrated design

- Understand why the State Education Department is promoting High performance school design and operation
- Understand how School Board Policy can influence behavioral change in staff and students
- Recognize the priorities that the Department places on projects involving expenditure of state resources
- Learn through NY-CHPS, where the most benefit can be gained for your school

At the end of the session, you will:
- Understand how the Power Authority transformed its office building in White Plains into the state’s first LEED Gold-EB facility and how this experience can be applied to existing school buildings
- Be familiar with NYPA’s “Power to Schools” program and how it can help schools throughout the state use energy more efficiently, benefit from clean new power sources and take significant steps toward potential LEED designation
- Recognize the pivotal role that school districts and other governmental entities must play in advancing sustainable development
- Appreciate the special LEED-related challenges and opportunities presented by existing buildings

- Learn about financial incentives and services that NYSERDA provides
- Understand the benefits of energy benchmarking and hear about several districts that have used this program and received national awards
- Learn about several tools and resources that NYSERDA has developed for K-12 schools
- Learn about the marketing and outreach partnership that LIPA, NYPA and NYSERDA are embarking on to facilitate better service to the K-12 schools sector
