Polyguard® TERM™ UVR Barrier is used as an insect barrier and waterproofing membrane for above grade exposed concrete.

1.04SUBMITTALS

A.Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data, installation instructions, use limitations and recommendations. Include certification of data indicating VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content of all components of waterproofing system.

B.Samples: Submit representative samples of the following for approval:

C.Sustainable Design Submittals:

1.Submit invoices and documentation from manufacturer of the amounts of materials and content for products specified.

2.Submit invoices and documentation showing manufacturing locations and origins of materials for products manufactured and sourced within 500 miles of project location.

D.LEED Submittal: Documentation of materials, recycled content and location of manufacturer.

1.LEED MR Credit 2 – Construction Waste Management: Provide documentation of reusable materials by weight and volume diverted back to manufacturing process or to appropriate sites.

2.LEED, MR Credit 5 – Regional Materials: Provide documentation for cost of materials or products that have been extracted, harvested, or recovered and also manufactured within 500 miles of project site.

a.If only a portion of the materials or products is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only provide percentage by weight for credit value.

4.LEED, EQ Credit 5 – Indoor Chemical and Pollutant Source Control: Provide documentation of long term testing of ability to physically block access by termites and other insects into the structure, thus reducing future usage of pesticides. Provide documentation of ability to physically block penetration of residual pesticides in the ground into the structure.

5.LEED, ID Credit 1:

1.1 Provide documentation of long term testing supporting the environmental and health benefits obtained through the physical blocking of insects and other pests from entry to the structure, therefore reducing the need for application of pesticides over the life of the structure.

1.2. Provide documentation of ability of the barrier maintain its integrity during and after construction by high puncture resistance, strength, and self-healing properties

1.05QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Barrier System must be manufactured by a company with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the production and sales of membrane waterproofing materials, as well as technical and sales personnel with backgrounds in entomology and/or pest control.

B. Applicator Qualifications: A firm having at least 5 years of experience in applying these types of specified materials and specifically accepted in writing by the membrane system manufacturer.

C. Materials: For each type of material required to complete the work of this section, provide primary materials which are the products of a single manufacturer.

D. Pre-Application Conference: A pre-application conference shall be held to establish procedures and to review conditions, installation procedures and coordination with other related work. Meeting agenda shall include review of special details and flashing.

E.Manufacturer’s Representative: Arrange to have trained representative of the manufacturer on site periodically to review installation procedures. Representative(s) must be trained in pest control as well as waterproofing.

1.06DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.Deliver materials to site in manufacturer's original, unopened containers and packaging, with labels clearly identifying product name and manufacturer.

B.Store materials in a clean, dry area in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

C.Store adhesives and barrier membrane at temperatures of 40oF (5oC) and above to facilitate handling.

D.Store membrane cartons on pallets.

E.Do not store at temperatures above 90oF (32oC) for extended periods.

F.Keep away from sparks and flames.

G.Completely cover when stored outside. Protect from rain.

H.Protect materials during handling and application to prevent damage or contamination.

I.Avoid use of products which contain tars, solvents, pitches, polysulfide polymers, or PVC materials that may come into contact with waterproofing membrane system.

1.07PROJECT CONDITIONS

  1. Work should be performed only when existing and forecasted weather conditions are within the limits established by the membrane manufacturer. Membrane should only be installed when temperature is 40°F (4.44°C) and rising. Consult manufacturer for information concerning cooler temperatures.
  1. Proceed with installation only when substrate construction and preparation work is complete. Ensure that subsoil is approved by architect or geotechnical firm.
  1. Warn personnel against breathing of vapors and contact with skin and eyes; wear appropriate protective clothing and respiratory equipment.
  1. Keep flammable products away from spark or flame. Post “No Smoking” signs. Do not allow spark producing equipment to be used during application and until all vapors have dissipated.
  1. Maintain work area in a neat and workmanlike condition. Remove empty cartons and rubbish from the site daily.

1.08WARRANTY

  1. Provide a written 5 year material warranty from the manufacturer upon completion and acceptance of the installation.

2.03SYSTEM ACCESSORIES

A.Surface Roller Grade Adhesive or Sealant:

1. Polyguard® 650 LT Liquid Adhesive:A rubber based adhesive insolvent solution which is specifically formulated to provide excellentadhesion of Polyguard membranesto concrete surfaces.Designed for use on applications down to 25°F(-4ºC).

2. Polyguard® California Sealant:A rubber based sealant in solvent solution which is specifically formulated to provide excellent adhesionwith the Polyguard Waterproofing Membrane. The VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content meets the SouthCoast Air Quality Management District regulations established underthe February 1, 1991 version of Rule 1168 ©) (2) Adhesion andSealant Applications. Polyguard California Sealant is classified asan Architectural Sealant Primer Porous; with VOC of 521 g/L. CurrentSCAQMD regulations for this type sealant primer are 775 g/L.

PART 3EXECUTION

3.01EXAMINATION

  1. Normal weight structural concrete should be allowed to cure a minimum of 7 days. Minimum cure time for lightweight structural concrete is 14 days.
  1. Notify General Contractor if surfaces are not acceptable. Do not begin surface preparation or application until unacceptable conditions have been corrected.
  1. Examine surfaces to receive membrane. Concrete should be structurally sound, free of voids, spalls, loose aggregate, and sharp ridges.Remove any dust, dirt, debris or foreign materials such as wax, oil, grease, or form release materials containing these materials. Use repair materials which are acceptable to the membrane manufacturer.
  1. All form tie holes and bug holes must be repaired and filled flush with the surrounding surface.

3.02SURFACE PREPARATION

A.Protect adjacent surfaces not designated to receive waterproofing and insect barrier.

B. Prepare surfaces to receive waterproofing and insect barrier in accordance with manufacturer'sinstructions.

3.03APPLICATION

  1. Make sure the surface is clean, dust free, smooth, and dry
  1. UV resistant barrier can be applied either vertically on the exposed concrete, or horizontally, depending on the amount of exposed vertical concrete which will be exposed above grade. The top of the UV resistant barrier should be adhered on the horizontal slab surface, installed over the horizontal portion of the Flashing Barrier starting on the horizontal at the base of the vertical. The bottom of the UV resistant barriershould extend BELOW GRADE and a minimum of 4” overlapped in a shingle fashion over the vertical barrier (either Underslab or Foundation). See the UV resistant barrier detail.

After determining the required dimensions of the UV resistant barrier cut pieces of barrier to length as needed and apply to substrate 30-60 minutes after liquid adhesive has been applied. The barrier should be shingle lapped a minimum of 4” over any barrier which is below it. Side laps of adjacent pieces should overlap a minimum 2”.

  1. Roll each course of the barrier with a hard surface roller after installation. This will ensure 100% adhesion to the concrete surface. Pay special attention to rolling side laps and shingled overlaps, as well as the top termination.
  1. If multiple courses of UV resistant barrierare required to reach from the foundation barrier or underslab barrier below it, place each course from the lowest level up. Each course should be overlapped a minimum of 4” over the course below it.
  1. Terminate all top horizontal edges with mastic or sealant recommended by manufacturer.
