Term in Summary

Term 1 2010 welcomed our new enthusiastic canteen manager Pina Tripodi, who came to us with over 3 years experience working in various inner west primary schools, and she holds a current food handlers certificate. She has settled in very well, and feedback from both students and volunteer parents working with her, has been very positive.

With the expansion of the school throughout the building, this has freed up space in the 1st floor foyer to allow the canteen to set up a daily “counter top” service at morning tea & lunch time.

This has proven to be very successful already. Whilst it is a new and developing initiative, it allows us to offer a wider range of items for children (and teachers) to purchase and to display healthy food lines in an attractive and appealing way to encourage children to select them eg: a fruit bowl for whole fruit purchase, platters of fruit kebabs, watermelon slices, frozen grapes & orange quarters, fruit & jelly cups , small cups of carrot/celery/cucumber sticks etc... We have also introduced garlic bread available at morning tea for 50c a slice which has been very popular.

Mensa specials were again held every Thursday, with our “pizza diva’s” making numerous trays of pizza each alternate week, and various specials, lasagne, pasta bosciaola, fried rice & spare ribs throughout the term.

We had a muffin madness morning and also made homemade hot cross buns for Easter.

As always, volunteers are critical to ensure we are able to operate the canteen efficiently, especially with the introduction of the counter top service from 1-1.45pm in the lunch break, which is time consuming. We have at least 10 new parents who have signed up to volunteer in the canteen and hopefully we can increase the numbers as the year progresses. Mothers, fathers or grandparents are welcome to help out in the canteen, an ability to cook is not essential and it is relaxed comfortable setup for all.

The canteen as always, supports scheduled school events:

  • Welcome morning Tea for new parents
  • Morning Tea for parents at Easter Hat Parade

Pina & Elise attended canteens association food expo in March to consider new ideas for the canteen.
