GUIDE SPEC – CALSTAR PRODUCTS, INC.11/04/2009

SECTION 321000 - UNIT PAVING

CalStar® Fly Ash Pavers offer a green material choice. Their performance properties meet or exceed ASTM C 902 for SX Molded Clay Brick Pavers, allowing them to be used in place of clay pavers. Making fly ash into pavers binds and immobilizes it, transforming an environmental burden into a useful material. Fly ash pavers utilize a high proportion of recycled content and have very low embodied energy and carbon dioxide emission associated with production.

This document provides language suitable for adding fly ash pavers to an existing Unit Paving or Porous Unit Paving specification. Review CalStar fly ash pavers product literature, then edit specifications to meet the project’s requirements. Brick industry standard guide specifications are available from BIA at For assistance, visit calstarproducts.com or call 510-793-9500.

1.5QUALITY ASSURANCE

CalStar’s mineral oxide pigments provide precise color matching of bricks, eliminating the need to obtain all of a project’s brick from a single production run. However, for custom colors, consider including the following paragraph and associated subparagraph. Quantity of extra materials is an example only.

  1. Source Limitations for Fly Ash Pavers: For each color required, provide fly ash pavers of uniform texture and color, or a uniform blend within the ranges accepted for these characteristics, from single production run from single manufacturer.
  2. Extra Materials: Furnish extra units amounting to <2> percent of installed materials, for each color or color blend of fly ash pavers installed.

CalStar recommends using field sample panels or mockups to verify selections made with submittals and to set quality standards for workmanship. The following paragraph and subparagraphs are an example for a field sample panel. If a more extensive mockup is required, the field sample panel may be omitted.

  1. Field Sample Panel: Lay up a sample panel in accordance with Brick Industry Association (BIA) Technical Note 11A, Guide Specifications for Brick Masonry, Part 2, except provide horizontal panel approximately 4 feet by 3 feet (1.2 m by 1 m) over the specified paving base.
  2. Use masonry units from random cubes of units delivered on site.
  3. Include <mortar, <grout, <and <sand >joints specified.
  4. Use sample panels approved by Architect for standard ofworkmanship for new paving work.
  5. Use sample panel to test cleaning methods.
