SECTION 221116 - DOMESTIC WATER PIPING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  SUMMARY

  1. Section includes under-building-slab and aboveground domestic water pipes, tubes, and fittings inside buildings.

1.2  ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For transition fittings and dielectric fittings.

2.1  PIPING MATERIALS

See "Writing Guide" Article in the Evaluations for a discussion of how this Section is organized and the most efficient way to revise this Section. See "Piping Materials and Standards" Article in the Evaluations for a discussion of piping materials covered by referenced standards.

  1. Comply with requirements in "Piping Schedule" Article for applications of pipe, tube, fitting materials, and joining methods for specific services, service locations, and pipe sizes.
  2. Potable-water piping and components shall comply with NSF14 and NSF61. Plastic piping components shall be marked with "NSF-pw."

2.2  COPPER TUBE AND FITTINGS

Tube in "Hard Copper Tube" Paragraph below is available in NPS1/8 to NPS12 (DN6 to DN300).

  9. Ferrous housing sections.
  10. Grade "EN" EPDM-rubber tri-seal gaskets suitable for hot and cold water.

2.3  DUCTILE-IRON PIPE AND FITTINGS

Pipe in "Mechanical-Joint, Ductile-Iron Pipe" Paragraph below is available in NPS3 to NPS64 (DN80 to DN1600).

  2. AWWAC151/A21.51, with mechanical-joint bell and plain spigot end unless grooved or flanged ends are indicated.

2.4  GALVANIZED-STEEL PIPE AND FITTINGS

Galvanized-steel pipe and fittings corrode over time. They rust from the inside out. Galvanized-steel pipes can corrode to the point where the pipes are completely restricted. Corrosion also occurs in steel that is connected directly to copper or brass.

2.8  PIPING JOINING MATERIALS

  3. Full-face or ring type unless otherwise indicated.
  4. Metal, Pipe-Flange Bolts, Grooved Couplings, and Nuts: ASTM A 183, carbon steel unless otherwise indicated.
  5. Nuts: Zinc electro-plated.
  6. Solder Filler Metals: ASTMB32, lead-free alloys.
  7. Flux: ASTMB813, water flushable.
  8. Brazing Filler Metals: AWSA5.8/A5.8M, BCuP Series, copper-phosphorus alloys for general-duty brazing unless otherwise indicated.
  9. Solvent Cements for Joining CPVC Piping and Tubing: ASTMF493.

Retain first two subparagraphs below if required for LEED-NC, LEED-CI, or LEED-CSCreditIEQ4.1. VOC limit is that for CPVC solvent cements.

  1. CPVC solvent cement shall have a VOC content of 490g/L or less when calculated according to 40CFR59, SubpartD (EPA Method24).
  2. Adhesive primer shall have a VOC content of 550g/L or less when calculated according to 40CFR59, SubpartD (EPA Method24).

Retain subparagraph below if required for LEED for Schools CreditIEQ4.

  1. Solvent cement and adhesive primer shall comply with the testing and product requirements of the California Department of Health Services' "Standard Practice for the Testing of Volatile Organic Emissions from Various Sources Using Small-Scale Environmental Chambers."
  2. Solvent Cements for Joining PVC Piping: ASTMD2564. Include primer according to ASTMF656.

Retain first two subparagraphs below if required for LEED-NC, LEED-CI, or LEED-CSCreditIEQ4.1. VOC limit is that for PVC solvent cements.

  1. PVC solvent cement shall have a VOC content of 510g/L or less when calculated according to 40CFR59, SubpartD (EPA Method24).
  2. Adhesive primer shall have a VOC content of 550g/L or less when calculated according to 40CFR59, SubpartD (EPA Method24).

Retain subparagraph below if required for LEED for Schools CreditIEQ4.

  1. Solvent cement and adhesive primer shall comply with the testing and product requirements of the California Department of Health Services' "Standard Practice for the Testing of Volatile Organic Emissions from Various Sources Using Small-Scale Environmental Chambers."
  2. Plastic, Pipe-Flange Gaskets, Bolts, and Nuts: Type and material recommended by piping system manufacturer unless otherwise indicated.

2.9  TRANSITION FITTINGS

  4. End connections compatible with pipes to be joined.
