Mercat Tours is currently recruiting for walking tour guides. We pride ourselves in providing excellent historical experiences in Edinburgh, and beyond. Our award winning training programme, which all guides must complete, provides participants with a variety of core skills and excellent standards of service.
Job description
In addition to delivering first class tours, other duties include:
· To answer visitor questions openly and honestly
· To adapt tours to visitor’s needs and make their comfort your key concern
· To promote Mercat products , events and merchandise
· To co-ordinate with fellow Mercat staff to ensure smooth delivery of tours
· To comply with all company policies on security, environmental issues and health and safety
· To meet and exceed visitor’s expectations
· To be a positive ambassador for Mercat Tours
What are we looking for in our applicants?
· Training in history or history related subject
· Excellent local knowledge
· Energy & enthusiasm
· A flair for drama
· Excellent standards of customer service
· Professional attitude and appearance
· Fluency in German and/ or French is an advantage
Job Information
· The contract offered is a 10 month Fixed Term Contract from February 2016
· The minimum hours offered at 10hr per week, variable hours
· There is the potential to work over time, based on demand

Recruitment & Audition Process
· Deadline for applications is Friday 29th January 2016
· All applications must be submitted on an application form and may be handed in, emailed or posted to the Mercat Tours office
· Only successful applicants will be contacted to arrange an interview audition
· Those individuals invited to audition will be given a story to rehearse and perform as part of the interview week beginning 8th February
· At the auditions, we are looking for guides who show us they can take a damn good story and tell it damn well. We are also looking for hardworking guides who take pride in what they do.
Training Programme
· Training will consist of observing tours, participating in tours, and sessions with the trainer to cover H&S and other subjects.
· Time will be required to learn content and presentation of tours.
· Assessments will consist of an essay and several oral presentations which will carry a Post Graduate Certificate in Walking Tour Guiding qualification on completion
· When trainees reach an acceptable standard of performance for each tour, they will be cleared for conducting solo tours, private bookings
· The Mercat Tours Training Programme is intensive and builds valuable transferable skills as well as providing varied opportunities for employment within the business.
· There is a small fee payable for training, which is only due once training has been completed, assessments passed and guides are conducting tours. The fee is £80 and includes an accredited certificate from Edinburgh Napier University. More details on this qualification will be given at interview.
