SECTION 08331 - OVERHEAD COILING DOORS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes the following types of overhead coiling doors:
  2. Insulated service doors.
  3. Fire-rated service doors.
  4. Control panels for doors not located at truck docks.

1.2DEFINITIONS

  1. Operation Cycle: One complete cycle of a door begins with the door in the closed position. The door is then moved to the open position and back to the closed position.
  2. NEMA ICS: National Electrical Manufacturers Association Industrial Control and Systems standard.

1.3SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type and size of sectional overhead door and accessory. Include details of construction relative to materials, dimensions of individual components, profiles, and finishes. Provide roughing-in diagrams, operating instructions, and maintenance information. Include the following:
  2. Setting drawings, templates, and installation instructions for built-in or embedded anchor devices.
  3. Summary of forces and loads on walls and jambs.
  4. Motors: Show nameplate data and ratings; characteristics; mounting arrangements; size and location of winding termination lugs, conduit entry, and grounding lug; and coatings.
  5. Shop Drawings: For special components and installations not dimensioned or detailed in manufacturer's data sheets.
  6. Wiring Diagrams: Detail wiring for power, signal, and control systems. Differentiate between manufacturer-installed and field-installed wiring and between components provided by door manufacturer and those provided by others.

1.4PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Structural Performance: Provide overhead coiling doors capable of withstanding the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses without evidencing permanent deformation of door components:
  2. Wind Load for Typical Doors: Uniform pressure (velocity pressure) of 20 lbf/sq. ft., acting inward and outward.
  3. Wind Load for Paint Shop Doors: Uniform pressure (velocity pressure) of 20 lbf/sq. ft., acting inward and outward.
  4. Operation-Cycle Requirements: Design overhead coiling door components and operator to operate for not less than 100,000 cycles.

1.5QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced installer who is an authorized representative of the overhead coiling door manufacturer for both installation and maintenance of units required for this Project.
  2. Source Limitations: Obtain overhead coiling doors through one source from a single manufacturer.
  3. Obtain operators and controls from the overhead coiling door manufacturer.
  4. Fire-Rated Door Assemblies: Provide assemblies complying with NFPA80 that are identical to door and frame assemblies tested for fire-test-response characteristics per UL10b, and that are labeled and listed for fire ratings indicated by UL, FM, ITS/Warnock Hersey, or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
  5. Oversize Fire-Rated Door Assemblies: For units exceeding sizes of tested assemblies, provide certification by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction that doors comply with all standard construction requirements of tested and labeled fire-rated door assemblies, except for size.
  6. Listing and Labeling: Provide electrically operated fixtures specified in this Section that are listed and labeled.
  7. The Terms "Listed" and "Labeled": As defined in NFPA70, Article100.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1MANUFACTURERS

  1. Manufacturers: Unless otherwise directed by the Owner, provide products by one of the following:
  2. Cornell Iron Works Inc.
  3. Overhead Door Corporation.
  4. Wayne-Dalton Corp.
  5. Owner approved substitute.

2.2DOOR CURTAIN MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

  1. Door Curtain: Fabricate overhead coiling door curtain of interlocking slats, designed to withstand wind loading indicated, in a continuous length for width of door without splices. Unless otherwise indicated, provide slats of material thickness recommended by door manufacturer for performance, size, and type of door indicated, and as follows:
  2. Steel Door Curtain Slats: Structural-quality, cold-rolled galvanized steel sheets complying with ASTMA653, with G90 zinc coating.
  3. Provide manufacturer's standard flat-profile slats.
  4. Insulation: Fill slat with manufacturer's standard rigid polyurethane-foam-type thermal insulation complying with maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of 75 and 450 respectively, according to ASTME84. Enclose insulation completely within metal slat faces.
  5. Inside Curtain Slat Face: To match material of outside metal curtain slat and not less than 0.028 inch thick galvanized steel.
  6. Endlocks: Malleable-iron castings galvanized after fabrication, secured to curtain slats with galvanized rivets or high-strength nylon. Provide locks on not less than alternate curtain slats for curtain alignment and resistance against lateral movement.
  7. Windlocks: Malleable-iron castings secured to curtain slats with galvanized rivets or high-strength nylon, as required to comply with wind load.
  8. Bottom Bar: Consisting of 2 angles, each not less than 1-1/2 by 1-1/2 by 1/8 inch thick, either galvanized or stainless steel or aluminum extrusions to suit type of curtain slats.
  9. Provide motor-operated doors with combination bottom astragal and sensor edge.
  10. Curtain Jamb Guides: Fabricate curtain jamb guides of steel angles, or channels and angles, with sufficient depth and strength to retain curtain, to allow curtain to operate smoothly, and to withstand loading. Build up units with not less than 3/16-inch-thick galvanized steel sections complying with ASTMA36 and ASTMA123. Slot bolt holes for guide adjustment. Provide removable stops on guides to prevent overtravel of curtain and a continuous bar for holding windlocks.

2.3HOODS AND ACCESSORIES

  1. Hood: Form to entirely enclose coiled curtain and operating mechanism at opening head and to act as weatherseal. Contour to suit end brackets to which hood is attached. Roll and reinforce top and bottom edges for stiffness. Provide closed ends for surface-mounted hoods and fascia for any portion of between-jamb mounting projecting beyond wall face. Provide intermediate support brackets as required to prevent sag.
  2. Fabricate steel hoods, for steel doors, of not less than 0.028-inch-thick hot-dip galvanized steel sheet with G90 zinc coating, complying with ASTMA653.
  3. Include automatic drop baffle to guard against passage of smoke or flame.
  4. Shape: Round.
  5. Integral Frame, Hood, and Fascia: Provide welded assemblies of the following sheet metal:
  6. Fabricate of not less than 0.064-inch-thick hot-dip galvanized steel sheet with G90 zinc coating, complying with ASTMA653.
  7. Smoke Seals: Provide UL-listed and -tested smoke-seal perimeter gaskets.
  8. Weatherseals: Provide replaceable, adjustable, continuous, compressible weatherstripping gaskets fitted to bottom and at top of exterior doors, unless otherwise indicated. At door head, use 1/8-inch-thick, replaceable, continuous sheet secured to inside of curtain coil hood.
  9. Provide motor-operated doors with combination bottom weatherseal and sensor edge. Refer to paragraph “Obstruction Detection Device” for sensor edge information.
  10. In addition, provide replaceable, adjustable, continuous, flexible, 1/8-inch-thick seals of flexible vinyl, rubber, or neoprene at door jambs for a weathertight installation.
  11. Extend seals into jambs for full edge seal.
  12. Windows: Provide windows of 1/4-inch clear, transparent acrylic sheet, of size and in arrangement as follows: Set glazing in vinyl, rubber, or neoprene glazing channel secured to curtain slats.
  13. Size: Nominal 8 inches wide x 1-1/2 inches high.
  14. Arrangement: Fill area 4’ wide by 2’ high with windows spaces at 12 inches on center in every slat. Center window area in door width and center at 5 feet above floor.
  15. Provide with fire-rated doors an automatic-closing device inoperative during normal door operations, with governor unit complying with requirements of NFPA80, with easily tested and reset release mechanism, and designed to be activated by the following:
  16. Governor: Oscillating type.
  17. Temperature rise and melting point of 165 degF (74 degC) replaceable fusible links, interconnected and on both sides of wall of door opening.
  18. Building fire alarm and detection system and door-holder-release devices.

2.4COUNTERBALANCING MECHANISM

  1. General: Counterbalance doors by means of adjustable-tension steel helical torsion spring, mounted around a steel shaft and contained in a spring barrel connected to door curtain with required barrel rings. Use grease-sealed bearings or self-lubricating graphite bearings for rotating members.
  2. Counterbalance Barrel: Fabricate spring barrel of hot-formed, structural-quality, welded or seamless carbon steel pipe, of sufficient diameter and wall thickness to support rolled-up curtain without distortion of slats and to limit barrel deflection to not more than 0.03 in./ft. of span under full load.
  3. Provide spring balance of one or more oil-tempered, heat-treated steel helical torsion springs. Size springs to counterbalance weight of curtain, with uniform adjustment accessible from outside barrel. Provide cast-steel barrel plugs to secure ends of springs to barrel and shaft.
  4. Fabricate torsion rod for counterbalance shaft of cold-rolled steel, sized to hold fixed spring ends and carry torsional load.
  5. Brackets: Provide mounting brackets of manufacturer's standard design, either cast iron or cold-rolled steel plate with bell-mouth guide groove for curtain.

2.5FINISHES, GENERAL

  1. Thermoset Finish: Apply baked polyester finish consisting of primer and thermosetting topcoat according to coating manufacturer's written instructions for cleaning, pretreatment, application, and thermosetting.
  2. Minimum Coating Thickness: 0.6 mils (0.0006 inch) DFT not including primer.
  3. Apply to door curtain and hood.
  4. Color: Match Chrysler “Machine White” NPVP 5Y 9/1.
  5. Control Panels Finish Color: Match Chrysler “Machine White” NPVP 5Y 9/1.
  6. Provide other exposed metal surfaces with a coating to match building steel.

2.6MANUAL DOOR OPERATORS

  1. Provide manual operators, unless electric door operators are indicated.
  2. Chain-Hoist Operator: Provide manual chain-hoist operator consisting of endless steel hand chain, chain pocket wheel and guard, and gear-reduction unit with a maximum 35-lbf effort for door operation. Provide alloy steel hand chain with chain holder secured to operator guide.

2.7ELECTRIC DOOR OPERATORS

  1. General: Provide electric door controls and operator assembly of size and capacity recommended and furnished by door manufacturer for door and operational life specified, with electric motor and factory-prewired motor controls, starter, gear-reduction unit, solenoid-operated brake, clutch, control panels/stations, control devices, integral gearing for locking door, and accessories required for proper operation.
  2. Comply with NFPA70.
  3. Door-Operator
  4. Operator Type: Provide wall-, hood-, or bracket-mounted, jackshaft, gear-head hoist-type unit consisting of electric motor, enclosed worm-gear running-in-oil primary drive, chain and sprocket secondary drive, and auxiliary chain-hoist with floor level disconnect (i.e., automatic operation suspension).
  5. Configure operator so motor can be removed without disturbing limit-switch adjustment and without affecting emergency auxiliary operator.
  6. Include safety friction clutch to prevent the door from uncoiling should the spring fail in the open position.
  7. Electric Motors: High-starting torque, reversible, continuous-duty, ClassA insulated, complying with NEMAMG1, with overload protection, sized to start, accelerate, and operate door in either direction, from any position, at not less than 2/3fps or more than 1fps, without exceeding nameplate ratings or considering service factor.
  8. Type: Polyphase, medium-induction type.
  9. Service Factor: According to NEMAMG1, but not less than 115 percent of nameplate rating.
  10. Provide totally enclosed, nonventilated or fan-cooled motors (TEFC), fitted with plugged drain, and controller with NEMAICS6, Type12 oil-resistant enclosure unless otherwise indicated.
  11. Coordinate wiring requirements and electric characteristics of motors with building electrical system.
  12. Automatic Operation Suspension or Disconnect Device: Provide hand-operated disconnect or mechanism for automatically engaging sprocket-chain operator and releasing brake for emergency manual operation while disconnecting motor, without affecting timing of limit switch. Mount disconnect and operator so they are accessible from floor level. Include interlock device to automatically prevent motor from operating when emergency operator is engaged.
  13. Limit Switches: Provide heavy duty, rotary cam type adjustable switches, interlocked with motor controls and set to automatically stop door at fully opened and fully closed positions. Provide in NEMAICS6, Type12 oil-resistant enclosure unless otherwise indicated. Provide contacts for interlocks with the following:
  14. Automatic operation suspension device.
  15. Door controls.
  16. Obstruction detection device.
  17. Include stop lock bearing to prevent the door from free falling.
  18. Door Controls: Provide control equipment complying with NEMAICS1, NEMAICS2, and NEMAICS6, with NFPA70, Class 2, control circuit, maximum 24-V, ac or dc.
  19. Provide one of control panel for each door having an electric operator except at truck docks, and other locations where directed. Also exclude remote control station at truck docks and other locations where directed.
  20. Control Panel: NEMAICS6, Type12, oil-resistant enclosure with flange-mounted hinged door. Include the following:
  21. General: Mount electrical components inside enclosure to allow physical clearances sufficient for mounting, wiring adjustment, testing, and replacement. Arrange and orient each component so identification can be determined without moving component or its wiring. Use separately mounted terminal strips for power circuits and control circuits.
  22. Provide contacts, relays and other components necessary for an operational installation, including but not limited to:

1)Floor loops; may be future installation by others.

2)Remote control station.

3)Obstruction detection device controls.

4)Door heater.

5)Hold open timer.

  1. Disconnect: Hand-operated, lockable blade-type with three lock-out hasps. Fused and integral motor starter.
  2. Incoming Power Supply: 480 volt, 3 phase, 60 Hertz
  3. Starters: Two magnetic full voltage with thermal overloads. Minimum size 1.
  4. Transformer: Step-down type for 24 volt control voltage. Provide additional transformer, if required, for door operator.
  5. Panel Mounting Height: 4 feet above finish floor.
  1. Remote Control Station: 3-button control station with pushbutton controls labeled "Open," "Close," and "Stop."
  2. Momentary contact type for green “Open” and red “Stop” buttons.
  3. Constant contact type for black “Close” button.
  4. Units shall be full-guarded, heavy-duty type, with NEMAICS6, Type12, oil-resistant enclosure. Mount in door of control panel unless otherwise directed.
  1. Obstruction Detection Device: Each motorized door shall have an external automatic safety sensor able to protect full width of door opening. Activation of sensor immediately stops and reverses downward door travel.
  2. Sensor Edge: Locate within astragal or weatherstripping mounted to bottom bar. Contact with sensor shall immediately stop and reverse downward door travel. Connect to control circuit using manufacturer's standard take-up reel or self-coiling cable.
  3. Provide electrically actuated automatic bottom bar of self-monitoring type, a 4-wire configured device.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1INSTALLATION

  1. General: Install door and operating equipment complete with necessary hardware, jamb and head mold strips, anchors, inserts, hangers, and equipment supports according to manufacturer's written instructions and as specified.
  2. Install fire-rated doors to comply with NFPA80.
  3. Touch-up welds in painted surfaces.
  4. Install push button stations at locations and heights indicated or directed.

3.2ADJUSTING

  1. Lubricate bearings and sliding parts; adjust doors to operate easily, free from warp, twist, or distortion, and fitting weathertight for entire perimeter.
