Second ATV to the ISS, the Johannes Kepler mission (VNR)

Arriving by sea from Bremen, ESA’s second Automated Transfer Vehicle ATV-2 proudly displayed its name during its last Earth-bound journey into the Kourou Spaceport.

The Johannes Kepler is the first production series ATV, with improved safety margins, carrying more cargo and taking less time than the Jules Verne to dock with the International Space Station.

[Views of Jules Verne approach & docking]
The ATV’s inaugural flight had incorporated two “demo days” with verification of its collision avoidance manoeuvre to fully demonstrate its system safety and absolute reliability.

“Our Russian colleagues were saying this vehicle is so complex that it will never dock, and when they got report of the Jules Verne staying say that distance (shows with hands) in front of the ISS not moving a millimetre they were deeply impressed and when the ATV actually was docking, the crew almost didn’t notice this. When a Progress or a Soyuz docks to the ISS they feel a bump. So the precision of ATV is tremendous compared to the mass of the vehicleit represents.”

[Shots of Toulouse ATV-CC]
The Johannes Kepler flight will be monitored at the ATV mission control centre in Toulouse. Teams there will be ready to instantly react to any eventual anomaly, confident that the freighter will reach the station at the scheduled date.

“Les partenaires maintenant nous font confiance, au véhicule, aux opérateurs, à nos procédures, aux moyens de communication. Ils savent qu'on peut le faire puisque cela a été fait une première fois dans des conditions qu'on peut qualifier d'idéales."
["Our partners know they can rely on us, on the vehicle, on our procedures and communication links. They know we can do it since it's already been done once in ideal conditions."]

[Shots of ATV-2 tanks, cargo rear-loading]
The space freighter has been fully loaded: 7.1 tons, of which 4.5 tons of propellants to re-boost the ISS orbital complex, 850 kg of fuel for the Russian FGB module, 100kg of gas (air, oxygen and nitrogen), and 16 hundredkg of dry cargo.
10:02:09
[Shots of “thro’ the hatch” loading trials]
Most of this was loaded last September. However this second mission innovates with a ‘late-access’ loading: the last minute addition, in the Final Assembly Building, of cargo introduced through the 80cm diameter docking hatch.

[Silicon Worlds animation re-boost of ISS]
While it is docked, the Johannes Kepler will fulfil one of its essential roles, firing its own engines to increase the Space Station’s altitude in several steps, a 30km attitude gain in total. Operations closely monitored by ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli and the rest of the crew.

[Shots of inside ATV-1 cargo hold before it undocked]
Before its departure the ATV will be filled with waste materials and objects no longer required on the ISS. It will then undock and perform a controlled re-entry burning up in the Earth’s atmosphere above the Pacific Ocean.

The ATV programme has today passed into a new phase of recurrent flights. But for all involved, such space rendezvous will remain spectacular, emotional moments.

“Obviously the first one was extra-special, but I think we will all have the same level of excitement for the second one. I’m confident of that.”
