January 16, 2008

Seattle Yacht Club

CORRECTED COPY

Members present: Tom Godwin, Marcia Speer, Jane Anderson, Dalene McIntire, Gretchen Taylor, Brenda Barnette, Katie Campbell, Carrie Davis, Katie Effert, Ryann Grady, Julie Hamasaki, Don Hanson, Naomi Hanson, Janice Horne, Daniel Overstreet, Danielle Overstreet, Ron Quinn, Jean Rassbach, and Doug Wilson.

The meeting was brought to order at 7:05 PM by President Tom Godwin with the members so noted above in attendance which represented a quorum. Tom welcomed everyone to the meeting in the New Year.

Jean Rassbach moved and it was seconded to approve the November 7 meeting minutes as submitted.

President’s Report: Tom introduced the new members in attendance: Brenda Barnette, Katie Effert, Daniel and Danielle Overstreet. He then went around the table and had everyone introduce themselves.

At the 2005 shows, Alan Wright of Bothell, presented Jane with a Seattle Kennel Club sterling silver medallion that had been found amongst his late aunt's belongings. The inscription on the medallion was "First Prize awarded to JUDY C 1st Open & Winners 1901" The medallion has an attachment on it that indicates it possibly was worn as an adornment. It will be on display at the SKC tables along with other memorabilia.

Treasurer’s Report: Marcia’s reports were distributed to all in attendance and are attached to these minutes.

Marcia reported she had moved $30,000 into a savings account and explained the various pages of her report.

Secretary’s Report: Dalene distributed a copy of the new club roster for 2008.

Show Chairman: Jane distributed the 2007 recap booklet from Varsity Communications who take care of our media work and the vendors. She then gave a rundown on the status of the vendors, sponsors, and program advertising for our 2008 shows as follows: in 2007 our sponsor, vendor and handbook advertising netted us $38,250.00; our goal for 2008 is to net $40,800. As sponsorship renewals are not strong this year we have done some creative and innovative planning to reach our goal.

Jane mentioned the Spectator Handbook is a free handout to attendees of the show which includes all the information on the show. Last year 77,000 handouts were printed of which 69,000 were distributed through the Seattle Times. Sheila Raymond does the layout and editing of the handbook.

This year we are advertising two weeks out from the show on KOMO’s radio traffic station (1000 AM), The Seattle Times and The Post Intelligencer. Seattle Dog Magazine is partnering with us, they have a circulation of 80,000 and we will have ads in it.

Tom complemented Jane and Varsity Communications for their thinking out of the box.

The AKC booth will be at the show this year. The Seattle Kennel Club booth will be set up so people coming in will see it first.

Jane then ran down the list of the various chairmen and their duties for the show. She read Lynne’s report (who couldn’t be at the meeting) which reported that our judges’ dinner is going be held at the Seattle Yacht Club after all, since it is now available.

February 8, 2008, is the deadline for anything that needs to be in print in the catalog or the Spectator Handbook.

There were a couple judging changes that are being worked on now. (Note: subsequent to the meeting they have been finalized. As Jean Fournier is unable to fulfill her assignment Saturday’s Herding Group will be judged by Mr. James Reynolds, Sunday’s BIS will be judged by Mr. James Noe and Jean’s entire breed assignment will be judged by Dr. Steve Keating.

Performance Events: Marcia noted the various events that will be presented during the show. (Note: subsequent to the meeting the PE schedule along with a brief description of each has been posted to our website, www.seattlekennelclub.org )

Jane reported on the Friday night seminar and gave out printed materials covering Patti Strand’s (National Director of NAIA) talk at the “Organizing to Win” seminar on Friday night before the show, to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Renton.

The Event Manager at Qwest Field, Tom Emanuel, is new this year.

Tom asked Jane about our future at Qwest Field. She said she is 90% sure we are okay for 2009 and 2010 as we have included a first right of refusal clause in our contract.

Friday Set Up: Tom, Ron, Daniel can be there that day. Katie Campbell said she can be there for about 4 hours. Marcia, Dennis, Carrie and husband, Jane, and Dalene will also be there to help out.

Julie asked about the tablecloths and runners. Tom said he had the runners.

Ryann Grady has volunteered to contact the 65 breed clubs in this area about offering Supported Entries at our 2009 and beyond shows. Seattle Kennel Club offers rosettes for BOB, BOS, BOW, WD and WB for Supported Entries if the Club offers trophies for those same wins. We also offer Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes as an option to those Breed Clubs who also support the entry of their breed at our shows.

We will work with Clubs that want to have a Designated Specialty at our shows. A Club

can be a Designated Specialty without being a Supported Entry as these are separate offerings.

May Agility Trial: Marcia reported on the agility trials on May 16, 17, and 18, 2008, at Argus Ranch in Auburn. She sent a sign-up sheet around the table for people to sign up for the times they can be at the trial site. We must have 5 SKC members there as a show committee each day. It doesn’t have to be the same people all three days.

Unfinished Business: None

New Business: Jane is working with Seattle Yacht Club to change our January general meeting to the fourth or last Wednesday of the month to get away from being sandwiched between Puyallup and the Rose City Cluster. (Note: subsequent to the meeting, the Yacht Club gave us the last Wednesday – January 28, 2009 -- for our general meeting.)

Ryann asked about the flyer for the Friday seminar. The current one does not really explain what it is about and how important it is.

Poster for the show: Jane asked if the members would like to distribute them again this year. The consensus was “yes”. Brenda said they could be left at the Seattle Humane Society in Bellevue as a distribution point and members could pick them up there.

There was some discussion concerning sponsors for the show. If anyone is interested, they should be sent to Varsity Communications.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:10 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Dalene McIntire, Secretary
