Seating and Positioning of the Geriatric Client

Course Description
This one-day interactive course provides an overview of seating and positioning in regards to the geriatric client, including mat evaluation and identification of positioning devices. Participants will learn to identify common postural abnormalities associated with seating, discuss common causes for the postural asymmetries, and identify possible seating solutions to correct or support the abnormalities. The course includes hands on approach to seating modifications and equipment set-up.

About Your Program Instructor
Julie McVeigh MOST, OTR/L, ATP, a licensed and registered Occupational Therapist with over 12 years clinical experience. In 2006, Julie because a RESNA certified Assistive Technology Profession and has since specialized in custom seating and positioning. She has gained extensive knowledge in the prescription and training of custom seating systems. Her experience spans multiple setting including inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation, long term care facilities, and home care. Julie has specialized training and experience with home modifications for safety and functional needs, wheelchair seating and positioning, and providing functional rehabilitative treatment.
Course Objectives:
- Identify common geriatric positioning concerns found in long term care settings.
- Identify possible causes for postural abnormalities.
- Identify the steps in completing a mat evaluation.
- Describe the importance of anatomical measurements and how they translate into equipment selection.
- Identify correct product selection based on postural asymmetries.
Intended Audience
This program is designed for OT’s and COTA’s who prescribe wheelchair seating systems in the geriatric setting.
