Team Leader Reports

Shirley Orsinelli announced that the Mesa Information Technology Committee voted on February 2, 2002 to support SDCCD Online. Mesa department chairs are still deciding on whether or not to offer SDCCD Online courses. The Mesa VP of Instruction, Marianne Tortorici, has indicated that Mesa will offer SDCCD Online courses in the fall.

Jessica Fender reminded the committee that she has no one on her Technical Team and could use volunteers. She discussed that status of the streaming media server purchase for the district.

Mary Gross reported on meetings with her team as well as working on a video of her online students for the Open House Event.

Karen Owen announced that CET is conducting another round of student orientations to WebCT for its Webmaster Certificate program. She mentioned that the City Council made a proclamation in favor of online instruction using a sponsor model.

Pat Lim reported that she online instruction training was held at City College in January. She suggested that we find ways for faculty to earn professional development credit for attending any training regarding online instruction. She emphasized the need for more training about online pedagogy.

Quality of Online Instruction

Judy Baker asked the committee members for suggestions as to how to generate constructive and positive dialogue among faculty about quality of online instruction issues. Suggestions included providing the faculty with relevant documents and white papers and offering SDCCD Online staff as a resource. Quality issues must be addressed by faculty.

Planning for the Future

Roger Gee generated ideas for how to recruit and prepare faculty for coverage of existing and future online courses. The group agreed that adoption of online instruction by faculty may be best achieved by a “toe in the water” method in which all faculty are provided with a WebCT course template automatically for posting a syllabus.
