FIRST FRIDAY – JANUARY 2, 2009
Cardinal Martini, retired archbishop of Milan and one of the great religious thinkers of our day, said, “It is in the daily celebration of the Eucharist that we as Christians are able to contribute the most to anything that happens in the world in any place on earth at any given point in time.” The most important activity that occurs in this or in any parish by any parishioner at anytime is the celebration of the Mass, Sunday and/or weekday.
Saints and popes, for the past 450 years have repeatedly said that the observance of attending Mass and offering special prayers on First Fridays of every month has enriched their experience of faith and significantly helped deepen their friendship with the Lord.
The Church teaches that First Friday devotions honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus bring special blessings to those observing them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC #2011) says, “A special worshipful relationship can be established between a believer and the person of Jesus Christ by concentrating on the love he came to bring his people.” The “heart” for ballad singers, lovers, and saints has, from time immemorial, been a symbol for the fullness of love. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus helps us to become more immersed in the Lord’s love for us, and more willing to share this love with one another. According to St. Margaret Mary, the Lord promises special graces to those who observe the First Friday.
I urge all parishioners who are able to celebrate Mass more than once a week to join us, when possible, for the daily celebration of the Eucharist. And I ask all our people to specially celebrate the First Fridays in a manner that they and their families will be so richly blessed through the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
