Why would an organisation, individual or a trust support Scottish Ballet, and how would you develop and implement that case for support?
10. / Scottish Ballet is Scotland’s national dance company. As a truly national company, Scottish Ballet performs across the UK, and the Company’s long history of touring internationally includes visits to the USA, China and Europe. As well as presenting in conventional venues, Scottish Ballet continually seeks new creative opportunities to promote and showcase its work to the widest possible audience, be it through new media, in unusual locations, or at one-off events.
The Company has strong classical technique at the root of all of its work. Its broad repertoire includes both classical and fiercely contemporary works, including seminal pieces from the 20th century modern ballet canon, signature works by living choreographers, new commissions from revered contemporary choreographers, and full-length narratives re-imagined with fresh relevance for a contemporary audience, creating a unique artistic identity.
Scottish Ballet provides a comprehensive education and outreach programme to complement its production and touring activity. Education initiatives and classes include work with people of all ages and abilities, and Scottish Ballet’s Associate Programme encourages young dancers to train for a career in the industry. As part of this commitment to broadening audiences, Scottish Ballet was the first dance company in the UK to offer live audio-description for the visually impaired and maintains a programme of regular audio-described performances today.
In 2009, Scottish Ballet launched Scotland’s first ever conservatoire-based degree in Modern Ballet in partnership with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, a three year full-time vocational degree which bridges what was previously a critical gap in dance training in Scotland, allowing young dancers to complete their professional training in Scotland for the first time.
Location:
In 2009, Scottish Ballet moved into its purpose-built home at the Tramway international arts centre in Glasgow, creating a production and presentation facility of a scale and artistic mix unrivalled in the UK. Designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects, the building features three full-size dance studios, including the Peter Darrell Studio which is the largest dedicated dance rehearsal studio in Europe; a technical workshop; wardrobe facilities including a full workshop, fitting rooms, laundry and dying rooms, and shoe and costume stores; a small practice studio; a dedicated Education centre for classes and workshops; a fitness suite with Gyrotonic equipment; office space, and a social space and Green Room.
Glasgow:
Glasgow is one of the world’s top ten cities, as cited in a list compiled by travel guide company Lonely Planet. The city is home to cafés and bars hidden down cobbled lanes, world-famous restaurants and a mix of boutique shops and Victorian architecture - all underpinned by a wealth of theatres, museums and galleries. If you prefer countryside life, you don't need to go far to find it; the city has more than 80 parks and green spaces, with Loch Lomond and the Trossachs national park just 40 mins away.
