SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES OVERVIEW

5TH GRADE

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

Welcome to 5th grade! I will be teaching your child science/social studies this year. I am looking forward to a very productive year!

In science our goal is to continue the skills and mechanics of science. The four areas of study are Nature of Science, Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science. Students will take a Science STAAR test in 5th grade in the spring. Our goal is to prepare your child to do their very best on this test.

In social studies we will continue to practice map skill, introduce major events in American History, and study the geography of the United States.

Below are some classroom procedures and policies that you and your student need to be aware of so that we will have a successful year.

GRADING POLICIES

  1. GRADING PROCEDURE

Daily grades will be entered once in the grade book. (study guide, vocabulary, maps)

Major test grades will be entered twice in the grade book. (map tests, chapter tests, unit tests)

A minimum of 12 daily grades and 2 test grades will be taken.

If work is not turned in a zero will be given

  1. HOMEWORK

Homework will be given during the week. Check assignment book for details

  1. MAKE-UP WORK

When a student is absent, make-up work may be requested if the parent/guardian will call the Intermediate office before 9:00 a.m. and request the work. This work may be picked up in the office after 3:00 p.m. If the work is not picked up, it is the student’s responsibility to get the work from the office or teacher upon returning to school.

  1. CHEATING

Cheating will not be tolerated. A grade of zero will be given and the student will receive a U in conduct.

  1. There is no extra credit

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

  1. SUPPLIES

Students are expected to bring to class every day: pencil, red pen, science journal, and assignment book. *All work is done in pencil.

  1. HEADINGS & TURNING IN WORK

Students must put their name on their paper. (10 points will be taken off for no name)

Each class has a designated basket that all work will be placed in.

3. ASSIGMENT BOOKS

I will be checking their assignment books for written assignments and for notes from home. Your child should write down assignments in their book every day.

CLASS DISCIPLINE

  1. CONDUCT

Good behavior is imperative for a productive learning environment. The following rules are used in the classroom to foster a good environment:

  1. Bring supplies
  2. Use time wisely
  3. Cooperate with everyone
  4. Talk with permission
  5. Be kind and courteous
  6. No horseplay
  1. CONSEQUENCES

*First and second conduct marks will receive a warning.

* Third mark – 1 day of lunch detention

* Fourth mark – 1 day of lunch detention and parent contact

* Fifth mark – 1 day of lunch detention

* Sixth mark- office referral

* Some behaviors will be an immediate referral to the office: (fighting)

These steps are being taken to develop study habits and teach responsibility. Parents can be of help to their child at home by checking to see that all homework has been completed. I know that by working together we can have a successful and productive year.

If you have any questions, please send me a note or call the Intermediate office at 794-1558. My conference time is 10:25 – 11:00.
