Science Notebook Expectations

1)Science Notebooks

a)Option One: Online

i)In School Google Drive

ii)In your Science folder

iii)A separate folder for

(1)Each Chapter: Chapter 01, Chapter 02, Chapter 03, …, Chapter 17

(2)Independent Research Project

iv)I will periodically check you Google Drive Science Folder to grade the notes

b)Option Two: A spiral notebook or composition book

i)Table of Contents in the first 4 pages

ii)Each Section start on a new page

iii)Each Section is noted in the Table of Contents

iv)Your Independent Research Project will not be in your paper notebook

v)I will periodically collect your notebooks to grade the notes

2)Format for Notes

a)Option One: Cornell Method – example on page

i)Each page has a title of the section being covered

ii)There is a vertical line 1/3 of a page width from the left edge of the page

iii)Main ideas, comments, and vocabulary words are written in the left 1/3 of the page(In the textbook, main ideas are in blue at the top of each page)

iv)Notes are written in the right 2/3 of the page

v)A summary is written at the bottom of the page

b)Option Two: Charting Method – example on page

i)Each page has the title of the section being covered

ii)Each main idea is a subtitle (In the textbook, main ideas are in blue at the top of each page)

iii)Below each subtitle is a three column table

(1)Column 1 contains vocabulary words and concept names

(2)Column 2 contains vocabulary definitions and concept explanations

(3)Column 3 contains additional notes and pointers to additional online of paper information or drawing or …

iv)Each table has as many rows as are needed to cover the main idea

3)Taking Notes From Lectures

a)If you take notes during the lectures, in the appropriate format, then all you need to do when reading the textbook is to add to your notes.

b)You will need to decide if you are using Cornell Method or Charting Method for your notes.

4)Taking Notes From the Textbook

a)Write down the vocabulary words and their definitions in your own words. The first use of a vocabulary words is in purple. The definition is in the blue box on the right side of the page.

b)Read the questions at the end of the section to find out what you are looking for. Do not write down the answers. Just see if you know the answers.

c)Read the each paragraph and the write the important ideas.

d)Examine any figures to see if they have information that is not in the text.

e)You may draw pictures to help explain the content, but you must also write the ideas in words.

f)After taking notes on the section, go back over the questions and see if you know the answers.

g)Any questions you do not know how to answer, or unsure of the answer for, should be written in your science journal so you can ask it in class.
