Science Achievement Standards Verification

Background:

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) will review its Science Achievement Standards for Grades 5, 8,and High School this summer in preparation for adopting revised achievement standards (“cut scores”) for Oregon’s statewide Science assessment.

Achievement Standards are adopted by the State Board of Education to identify the cut scores deemed appropriate to “meet” or “exceed” Oregon’s content standards. Given the importance of these Achievement Standards, a variety of well informed stakeholders (i.e. teachers, principals, superintendents, parents, community members, etc) must be involved in making a recommendation for the State Board’s consideration.

Nominations:

ODE is seeking nominations for qualified participants to help prepare this critical recommendation. Qualified educators should have extensive experience with K-12 or post-secondary instruction, including substantial knowledge of Oregon’s science assessments and content standards. Parent and community members should have a solid understanding of the interdependence of instruction, content standards, and assessment, but do not necessarily need to be experts in these areas. ODE emphasizes the need for nominations that include: parents, business and industry staff, community college staff, and university faculty. It is expected that participantsattend each day and remain in session for the entire time.

The panel will be held on July 19, 20, and 21 in Salem, Oregon.

Using the form below, please identify the First and Last name of the nominee, his or her area(s) of expertise (i.e. Science, English Language Acquisition/English as a Second Language, Science Professional Organization, Business, Education Administration, School Board, Site Council, Parent, Community College, University etc.). Make sure to include complete contact information including phone number, email, and mailing address. Place an asterisk by the nominee’s first name if he or she participated as a panelist in the 2006 ScienceAchievement Standard Verification.

Please note: ODE is committed to having a panel that represents the diversity of our communities and state with a willingness to reach consensus in recommending statewide achievement standards. A report on the diversity of our panel will be part of our federal peer review process. For this reason, we have provided an optional opportunity to describe nominee’s race and/or ethnicity.
