Science 20 Spontaneity Quick Lab
The purpose of this “quick lab” is to determine the spontaneity of specific examples and compare predicted spontaneity to experimental results.
Variables (4 marks):
Controlled (3) / Manipulated (2) / Responding (1)Experimental Results – chart on back paper! (5marks)
Prior to performing this experiment, determine the oxidizing agent and the reducing agent. As well, calculate the cell potential for each reaction and predict whether the reaction will occur spontaneously. Finally, note observations for your reaction and whether or not your prediction was correct.

Observational Notes:
Analysis of Results – complete on a separate sheet of paper please
1. List the oxidizing agents from strongest to weakest (according to your lab results). Is this supported by the literature publication regarding oxidizing agent strength (include proof)? (2marks)
2. List the reducing agents from strongest to weakest (according to your lab results). Is this supported by the literature publication regarding reducing agent strength (include proof)? (2marks)
3. a. Is this experiment quantitative or qualitative? (1mark)
b. What type of things would you test (look) for in qualitative results? (1mark)
c. How would you test for quantitative results according to this lab? (1mark)
4. Describe (in detail) where in the real world are spontaneous electrochemical reactions used. Include a chemical reaction in your discussion. (3marks)
5. Describe (in detail) where in the real world a non-spontaneous electrochemical reaction would occur. Include a chemical reaction in your discussion. (3marks)
