American Studies II – America; An Emerging World Power / Grade/Level:

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
  • Analyze the problems that sparked progressive movement and determine whether there are any connections to the problems found in today’s America.
  • Examine and evaluate the groups of people that attempted to gain social justice and process they embarked upon during the progressive era.

CC.8.6.11-12.A: Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content.
CC.8.6.11-12.B: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.

-Why were many people worried about expanding American influence overseas?
-What pushed America into the Spanish-American War?
-What lands changed hands following the Spanish-American War?
-Why does America and other nations take over other territories?
-What were the various diplomatic policies of the Presidents of the Early 20th Century?
-Describe the process of America acquiring Alaska and Hawaii.
-Who are the 25th-28th Presidents of the United States of America?
Instructional Procedures and Strategies: (Include all learning guides, strategies (MAX and other), procedures, etc. that will be used during this unit.)
-The chapter will begin with the students taking a pre-test to help grasp how much students already know
-Students volunteers will read the proper pronunciationfor the list of vocab terms
-Students will define vocabulary terms using the text
-Students will review and practice vocabulary definitions as a class
-Students will be assessed on vocabulary terms
-Students will watch a video from “Discovery Streaming” and create a unique 6 question quiz of their own. They will then try to stump their classmates by quizzing them.
-Students will fill in the blanks of their PowerPoint notes as the instructor elaborates
-Students will complete several reading comprehension activities using (MAX strategies) as we go through the PP notes. Some will be completed with a partner, others individually.
-Students will complete and review a study guide.
-Student’s knowledge of America becoming a world power will be assessed with a chapter exam.
-Throughout the chapter students will be watching/reading the news and writing summaries from each current event session. When discussing what students highlighted the instructor will try to help the students make connections between today’s issues and the concerns of from the era of when America was becoming a world power.

-Student Learning Guides, Binders, Pencil/Pen
-Teacher Laptop, Smartboard, PowerPoint, and internet resources which may include but is not limited to: Streaming video, Internet, Newspaper and Audio Files
-Student text: Pennsylvania’s United States History: Modern History (Prentice Hall) 2008.
-Student What’s New packets
Differentiation/Accommodations:
-Various students will receive all differentiated instruction/accommodations in accordance with IEP’s and 504 plans.
-Accommodations may include but are not limited to: modified tests, extended time for completion, preferential seating, retesting, copy of notes, study guides, and/or opportunity to test with Itinerant Support Teacher.
