Florida Public Schools by School Type

The tables on the following pages list the number of Florida public schools by school type for each of Florida’s school districts, including statewide totals (as applicable). As of 11/15/13, the total number of active public schools in Florida is 4,294, based on the assignment of distinct school numbers compiled in the Department of Education’s Master School Identification (MSID) file. School types shown in the tables on the following pages are described below.

Table 1: Regular Elementary, Middle/Junior High, Senior High, and Combination Schools

This table shows the count of schools providing regular PK-12 instruction by grade levels taught, with totals included.

Table 2: Schools by School Type, Based on Grade Levels Taught

School types based on the level of instruction (by grade range) are included in this table. The “Totals” column counts all public schools for which grade codes are reported.

  • Elementary Schools: Schools providing regular or other instruction at one or more grade levels from PK through grade 5. This category may include schools serving grade 6 if also serving one or more grades PK through 5 (e.g., a K-6 school).
  • Middle/Junior High Schools: Schools providing regular or other instruction in middle school configurations (grades 6-8) and junior high school configurations (grades 7-9). This category also includes schools serving a single grade in the 6-8 range (e.g., a 6th grade center).
  • Senior High Schools: Schools providing regular or other instruction at one or more grade levels from 9 to 12. This classification includes 9th grade centers.
  • Combination Schools: Schools providing regular or other instruction in grade groupings that include more than one of the categories described above (e.g., PK-8, 6-12, K-12, etc.).

Adult Schools: Schools providing adult education instruction.

  • Totals: All schools from the categories above, summed by district.

Table 3: Schools by School Type, by Main Educational Program Area

In this table, schools are classified by the main educational program offered.

  • Regular Education: Schools offering regular or basic instruction.
  • Exceptional Education: Schools offering modified education programs for students identified as exceptional education students (students with disabilities or students who are gifted).

Schools by School Type Florida Department of Education

  • Alternative Education: Schools providing instruction via an alternative education delivery system to a specially designated student population.
  • Vocational/Technical Education: Schools providing instruction designed to assist students in obtaining specific job skills.
  • Adult: Schools providing basic or supplemental instruction designed for the adult population.*

* Note: Some adult schools from Table 1 may be counted as “Vocational/Technical Education” instead of “Adult” in Table 2.

Table 4: Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Centers, Charter Schools, and Magnet Schools

Schools providing special services/functions or special approaches to administration are counted in this table. Note that charter schools and magnet schools may include schools that provide regular instruction and/or other types of instruction.
