Russet Class Newsletter 31.10.17

Welcome Back!

We hope you have all enjoyed the October break, and that the children are feeling ready for their return to school. We will continue to embed rules and routines with the children, and help them to extend and deepen their new friendships within the class. This term is always a busy one, with the build up to our Nativity Play, and of course, the onset of winter and Christmas – an exciting time of year for children to join in with, along with the teachers!

Thank you…

What a busy end to our first term in the last week! Many thanks go to those of you who were able to join our story session. It was fantastic to have such high attendance for this; the children really enjoyed being able to take part in this event, and it was great to see so many surprised faces at the twist in the tale! Huge thanks, also, for all your support with the PE skills day – not only those of you who were able to cheer the children on around the parish field, but also wider thanks to family members for helping with sponsoring the event. Feel free to send in money over the course of this week, which will help go towards updating our bike store for Russet Class, along with some whole school projects, too.

School Website Update

Mrs Lupton and I have been busy updating the Russet Class page on the school website. You should now be able to find a range of photos on linked to our learning in Russet Class. You need to select Children and Classes on the tab, then hover over the Russet Class link.

Phonics Teaching Session

Just to let you know, Year R families are invited to attend a Phonics morning on our School Open Day, which will take place on Wednesday 15th November. I will be teaching phonics to our Year R children from 9:05 until about 9:30, so you are welcome to stay in school after the register, allowing you to see how we teach phonics, and to join your child in their learning. Year 1 families will not need to attend, as we held this event for you last year. More details to follow shortly with regard to our planned events for the rest of Open Day!

Our Learning this Week

Year R will now work on the letter sounds of h, b, land f this week; thinking about words which start with these sounds (hen, bat, log and fed as examples). They will also find out about ll, ss and ff at the end of a word, such as in hill, kiss and Biff. All children will take part in sharing their holiday news, and have a go at writing this into a simple sentence. Year 1 will be building their sentence skills to include the use of “and” in a sentence, but will need to ensure they have the correct use capital letters and full stops in their writing, too. We will also be looking at firework poetry towards the end of the week. Year R will learn a poem by heart – hopefully they can come home and perform it you over the weekend! Year 1 will extend their understanding of poetry by looking for rhyming words and adjectives in the text. Any kitchen / toilet tubes will be useful this week for some firework making craft, please. In maths we will be thinking about naming and describing a range of 2D and 3D shapes, thinking about similarities and differences, sorting them into groups and getting the children to find the odd one out. We will also work on positional language, using words such as in front, behind, on top, and next to, with Year 1 also learning about how shapes and objects can be rotated through quarter, half and three quarter turns, both clockwise and

anti-clockwise.During worship this week we will be welcoming the Family Trust into school, which will be attended by Year R for the first time.
