● Read to Achieve: had 51 students who hadn’t met end of grade benchmarks in January. We are down to 11 students who have not yet met, and they will have opportunities to meet benchmarks during our testing season and during summer school if needed.
● EOG’s - This is first year that 5th graders will take the Science EOG online (5/30).
● We are projected to be at 730 students next year.
● Received a waiver from HB 13 – the ratios of student:teacher will be the same next year. After next year, the ratio K-3 is 18:1, 24-25:1 in 4th & 5th.
● Most positions have been hired for. Ms. Rhodes will be running our after school program next year.
Reassignment Plan: Rebecca Drendel, Ed Aluise, Terry Hall
Since our meeting on May 2nd
● Dilworth Community meeting with Ann Clark
● Parent groups had an opportunity to upload alternative proposals through an online portal, which was shared with Ann Clark and Tara Lynn
● Terry and SLT catalogued ideas received
○ Those were submitted to CMS/board
○ CMS listened and the community clearly had an impact on the process
○ Were referenced in the board work session on the 9th
Since the Board Work Session:
● Ann Clark is developing revised proposals and will post them by tonight on the CMS website. These will be the proposals the board will vote on in their meeting on the 24th
● Elementary school pairing is likely to have strong support from CMS and the board
● The new proposals will likely include some version of the “Two Great Schools” middle school proposal that was submitted to the SLT ahead of the 9th and referenced in the work session
● Some parent groups are working to win support for including a Myers Park Traditional / Sedgefield Elementary facilities swap
○ Allows for parents to support two schools close to home
○ Strong support from Myers Park families; Support from CMS and the board is unclear
Looking Beyond the May 24th Board vote:
● Shift focus to uniting the community
● Need to ensure the energy and involvement from parents in the boundary change process is translated into support for building whatever the board votes for on the 24th.
● The vote for new SLT members will be coming in the next few weeks.
● The SLT and PTA can play a role in helping to bring organization to the efforts.
● If the combined elementary moves, once the new leadership is established for the schools they will engage the SLT and PTA to outline their needs.
● The group discussed resources that would support the success of the potential combined elementary (e.g. Assistant Principal and Dean for each campus, TD support for each campus, Specials Teachers for each campus, dedicated Guidance Counselors and Social Workers for each campus, etc.). Elevated staffing during the initial years of the combined elementary would help to ensure its success.
