Research Lead

ASchool Research Lead is responsiblefor providingresearch leadershiptosupport theHeadofSchoolandDeputyViceChancellor: Academic in meetingtheresearchobjectives oftheUniversityStrategic Plan.They will be appointed totherole bytheDeputyViceChancellor:Academic on the advice of the Head of School.They will haveoversight ofpostgraduateresearchstudentrecruitment andprogression,takealead role onthedevelopmentandimplementation ofUniversityresearch plansand provideleadership andsupportfor REFsubmissions.TheSchool Research Leadswill usuallybe Professors or Associate Professors but they do not necessarily need to be members of the School within which they are the Research Lead. They should:

•hold a doctoral level degree;

•have supervised at least one doctoral candidate through to successful

completion;

•hold senior supervisor status;

•hold an appointment on an academic career pathway at least at Senior

Lecturer level;

Inadditiontothisrole,School Research Leadswill undertake academic duties withintheirSchool/Directoratecommensuratewiththeiracademic grade andunder thelinemanagement oftheHead of

School/Director.

Work with theDeputyViceChancellor: Academictoprovideleadershipand take responsibilityfor research developmentwithintheUniversity

Providesupport and adviceto the AcademicDevelopmentDirectorate

Support theDeputyViceChancellor: Academic inmeetingtheresearchobjectives ofthe Academic strategy

TakealeadrolewithintheProfessoriateinsupportingUniversity-wide developmentsinresearch as required by the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Academic

Work with the ProDeanfor QualityonQualityAssurance processes relatingtothemanagementof postgraduateresearch students

Oversee andfacilitatebidsfor researchfunding insupport ofthe Schoolsandincollaborationwith theAcademic Development Directorate

Takealeadroleinpreparingfor REF submission

Oversee therecruitmentandadmission ofpostgraduateresearch students,allocationof scholarships and approval ofsupervisoryteams-

ensuringthatappropriateexpertisefor supervision andadequate resourcesfor the proper conduct oftheresearch are available,andthat anypotential ethical issues arisingfrom theapplicationare considered

Provide postgraduate research students’ pastoral care (including provision of an annual pastoral meeting for any student taking up the offer of this and consulting with postgraduate research students within the school about matters of research student satisfaction with supervision and support (e.g. research environment, resources, facilities, opportunities)). In any case where the School Research Lead is involved in the research student’s supervision, pastoral care must be delegated to another appropriately qualified individual.

  • Identifying to the Head of School and the supervisory teams any matters of concern raised by postgraduate research students, or any issues which may have wider university policy or procedural implications. If issues cannot be satisfactorily resolved through initial dialogue and/or implementation of YSJU processes for managing student concerns research students should be encouraged to make use of the University Complaints Procedure, where appropriate (published on the University website).

Provide advice to the Head of School on staff research development needs e.g. for PDRs, promotion, PGR supervision, academic leave

Oversee theprocesses for reviewingand assessingpostgraduate research students,workingwith the UniversityResearch AdministratorsandRegistryas required

Oversee datacollectioninrelationtoresearch activities andacademic performance(e.g.viaAPS,RaY andotherforms of onlinereporting)
