Peer Mentor Volunteer Responsibilities

Summary of Duties

Are you a parent of a client or of a former client of Grandview? Do you embrace a philosophy of parents helping parents? If so, this role may be for you.

Grandview Children’s Centre is currently looking for someone to fill an unpaid casual position with the unique skills and abilities of a Peer Mentor Volunteer.

Under the general direction of the Peer Mentorship Coach, the Peer Mentor Volunteer will assist in providing support to families in a sensitive and supportive manner, be available to answer questions about Grandview services and other outside resources that will increase the sense of hope and optimism for families. The Volunteers will have first-hand experience and knowledge of the joys and challenges that parents of children with special needs face.

Qualifications

·  Parent of a child with exceptional needs, who is currently or has previously accessed Grandview services

·  Experience offering advice and support to families

·  Demonstrated ability to engage families

·  Previous volunteer experience with Grandview an asset

·  Expertise in high demand areas including but not limited to funding opportunities, school transitions and advocacy and transition to adulthood

·  Working knowledge of community programs and services in addition to Grandview services

·  Well-developed communication skills including verbal, non-verbal, negotiation and listening skills.

·  Strong consultation and conceptual analysis skills.

·  Use of computer technologies to respond and communicate with families

·  Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.

·  Ability to set priorities and time management.
