SCHOOL PASTORAL MANAGER

Post:School Pastoral Manager

Grade:KS13 / KS14 TBC

Job Summary:To establish functional strategies for the school in all areas of pastoral care. To develop and implement long term plans within the school that guidestaff to support students to overcome their barriers to learning and maximise the opportunities provided for them.

To operate as a Senior Manager within the school, leading in the development of staff to best achieve the areas above.

To support students to achieve their full potential who may be exhibiting behaviour, emotional or social problems in school.

Furness is a specialist school for young people with emotional & social development needs so good interpersonal skills will play an important role in this exciting position

Principle Responsibilities:

Support for students
• To monitor behaviour, emotional and social issues within all year groups and make positive interventions when necessary.
• To monitor attendance and truancy issues and devise and implement intervention strategies to improve these issues.
• To identify personal issues that are affecting students performance at school and share this information with relevant staff in order to help the student maintain their school placement.
• To create and implement behaviour plans and monitor their success.
• To support students in lessons who are experiencing difficulties.
• To provide support to students in integration issues within their wider social environment

• To be accountable for implementation of a positive ethos within year groups and promote a positive behaviour code for students within these groups.
• To work to raise the self esteem of all students in all year groups, where appropriate organising conduct groups to raise the self esteem of the most vulnerable students at the school.
• To act as a key worker for students as and when appropriate.
• To provide clear guiding principals and strategies for school teaching staff in order to manage students behaviour and to minimise opportunities for poor behaviour during social time and lessons.
• To create and implement mentoring systems within the school
• To review,create and implement (with Governor’s approval) improved school and pastoral policies
• To drive forward innovation within the pastoral team
• To identify and adopt best practice across the school in all areas of pastoral care
• To be incorporate "Every Child Matters" in all new policy making and practices undertaken
• To articulate and support the school rules and dress codes with all students and their parents.

Inter-agency Working
• To initiate contact with other agencies on behalf of the school and parent/carers and to liaise with all parties on a regular basis.
• To represent the school when requested at Interagency or other professional meetings
• To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up to date student information on schools management information system and own pupil filing records
Support the student exclusion process
• To assist the Principal, when required to present the cases before the governors.
• Ensure sufficient and appropriate work is made available to parents during a student’s exclusion.

Promoting the Interests of the School
• To actively work with other senior management in school promotion strategies, in particular to include prospective students, parents and staff at local primary schools.
• Actively work with nominated primary schools by mentoring selected students with their behaviour and emotional issues.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

SCHOOL PASTORAL MANAGER

Experience

  • Experience of working in an educational setting with students with challenging behaviour
  • Demonstrable experience of working with young people and families
  • Experience of working in a multi agency setting
  • An understanding of the specialist support services available to young people in Kent
  • Experience of supporting SEN student transitions
  • Proven specialist experience of promoting social integration for SEN children
  • Experience of trouble shooting school-wide pastoral issues in a high profile setting
  • 5 Years + experience in school environments undergoing rapid change
  • Qualifications/Training
    Holds relevant professional qualification in education, youth or social work at Specialist/Advance level (Desirable)
  • Other relevant experience of working in the police, youth offending or health sector that would demonstrating an ability to inspire young people.
  • Behaviour management leadership training (Desirable)
  • Has a thorough understanding of child protection legislation and trained in child protection issues
  • Has attended a range of relevant specialist training courses to develop own knowledge of issues affecting young people and best practice in the management of these issues.
  • Holds First aid at work qualification or willingness to undergo first aid training. (Desirable)
  • Holds qualification to drive a minibus or willingness to undergo minibus training. (Desirable)
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of IT and ability to use word-processing, spreadsheet and database software.

  • Ability to communicate with young people, both individually and in a group setting.
  • Ability to motivate and engage young people to address the difficulties they are experiencing at home/school that affect their ability/willingness to learn
  • Ability to assess the needs of young people and their families and to work with other agencies to formulate and deliver packages of support.

  • Able to develop and maintain close links and work effectively with staff from other agencies

  • Confident basic user of ICT. Must be numerate and well organised.
