Maturity Matrix Dentistry (MMD)

What is the MMD?

The Maturity Matrix Dentistry (MMD) is a straightforwardpractice team development tool to allow the dental team to focus on how they work together in order to deliver dental care to their patients. Using the matrix enables the whole practice team to think about the quality of the care provided in 12dimensions, including topics such as Disinfection and Decontamination, Radiological Standards, Audit of Clinical Performance, Staff Employment & Wellbeing. It provides as useful, non-threatening method of self-evaluation.

A paper in the British Dental Journal describes development, use, and benefits of the MMD –

Barnes et al, BDJ 2012; 212:583-587

What does this mean in terms of time and commitment?

Initially you should read the brief Guide to MMD(please email for acopy), discuss it with your team, and contact us for further information if necessary. If you choose to use the MMD,please complete and return theapplication of interest form overleaf.

Following that, the tutor will arrange to visit your practice at a convenient time to facilitate the whole dental team through the process. We will discuss the matrix and come to a consensus as to what stage of development the practice has reached for each dimension. This takes about 2 hours. The tutor will ask you to set aside this time so all team members can participate fully without distractions. The tutor will also keep an attendance register of participants for CPD purposes.

Taking part means that each team member will qualify for 3 hours of verifiable CPD. This is allocated to:-

  • Initial discussion within the team and pre-reading about the MMD.
  • A facilitated session to complete the MMD.
  • Agreement of which dimensions the team wants to improve and which team member will lead this.
  • Reflection on the use of the MMD and subsequent completionof the feedback questionnaire.

What else will you gain by taking part?

MMD helps your team to focus on ‘where they are’ in the quality of team working and services delivered to patients. It helps to identify and prioritise areas for improvement. It also confirms areas where the team are doing well. The MMD stays with the practice and you will not have to share the results. You can give the tutor verbal feedback and completing the simple feedback questionnaire allows team members to claim verifiable CPD.
