School Improvement Team (SIT) Meeting – Harper Middle College HS

School Improvement Goals (2017-2018):

  1. By June 2018, HMCHS will provide a duty-free lunch period for every teacher on a daily basis.
  2. By June 2018, HMCHS will provide a duty-free instructional planning time for every teacher with the goal of providing an average of at least five hours of planning time per week.
  3. By June 2018, HMCHS will provide a positive school climate by promoting a safe learning environment free of bullying and harassing behaviors.
  4. By June 2018, 100% of seniors will have met all graduation requirements by the end of their 12th grade year (this includes students participating and not participating in grade 13). 100% of seniors not participating in grade 13 will graduate.
  5. By June 2018, HMCHS will earn an overall school proficiency rate on all NCFEs of 88% (80% is defined as letter grades A and/or B on NCFEs). This is an increase of 4.43% from last year. By June 2018, 75% of HMCHS students will earn a 3 or higher on their AP Exam. This is an increase of 4.5% from last year.

New Business / Inclement Weather Protocols (5 min) / Team reviewed any feedback regarding inclement weather notices/policies.
Review First Semester Data/Progress to Goal (25 min) / See Data Tracker for more information. Team reviewed end-of-semester 1 data. Principal reviewed action plans for teachers and how teachers are shifting their instructional practices to increase student proficiency. The EOY goal is 85% proficiency (A or B on NCFEs). The school composite is 84%.

Recruitment/Lottery Updates and adjustments to strategy (10 minutes)
  • Lottery Open House yesterday (2/6). Debrief of the event.
/ Great turnout for Open House.
We asked that a PeachJar flyer be sent to all HS families. That did not happen. The SIT wanted to know what happened. Dr. Nelson will investigate and send a follow up report to the team.
Currently 43 juniors have been accepted to Harper. We have 57 seats available for juniors and 38 seats for seniors.
Standing Items / Title IX (20 minutes).
We will:
  • Develop strategic recommendations for preventing sexual harassment in CMS and ensuring that students understand their right to be protected from sexual harassment.
  • Develop strategies for ensuring students understand how to report possible sexual harassment and are aware of the school’s obligation to promptly and effectively respond to sexual harassment complaints.
SLT members will review training and follow-up with any questions from the training. / No reports from team members.
Principal shared the teacher training and student training at the meeting to team members.
All teaching staff will facilitate Title IX training for students for this semester using the same training students received in the fall of 2017. Given that we have different students during the spring semester, we wanted to make sure all students received the training. The training must be completed by February 28.
