School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Meeting Minutes: May 12, 2015
The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) met on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Guerra Development Center, 1930 Herbert Lane.
The meeting was called to order at 9:09 am by Linda Garcia, SHAC Chairperson Elect and she welcomed all in attendance. Michele Flores, Health Services/Wellness Director, acknowledged all in attendance and welcomed the audience. Hortencia Delgado, Health Services/Wellness Department Secretary carried out the roll call for the SHAC.
The minutes from the SHAC meeting on March 17, 2015 were read by Linda Garcia. No corrections were made. First and Second motions were made by (Rosa Escobar, Velma Peña) to approve minutes.

Guest Speakers:
Ms. Leslie A. Ellenbogen, LCSW, Director of Counseling Services for Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio presented an Overview of Tools for Managing a Mental Health Crisis. She began by acknowledging that it was a good thing that EISD was recognizing the importance of Mental Health Awareness and Issues. She then went on to discuss the statistics of Mental Health Illness and discussed examples of issues different people experience. There were numerous questions from the audience and many different audience members decided to share their personal struggles with how mental health has affected a loved one. Ms. Ellenbogen reviewed the coping skills for managing a mental health situation A-assess risk for suicide or harm, L-listen nonjudgmental, G-give encouragement and information, E-encourage appropriate professional help, E-encourage self help and support groups. She also went over the treatment model which is modeled after the 12 step program of recovery. She also gave the audience a resource sheet and an app. that can be downloaded on cellphones. Her presentation was well received.

Potential SHAC Members who expressed a desire to join the SHAC and were placed on a waiting list were called by Hortencia Delgado to come to this meeting to officially join however none were present.

No nominations from the floor for secretary of SHAC.
Announcements
The EISD school board would officially recognize Mental Health Awareness at the school board meeting tonight 6:30 pm by reading the proclamation. Dr. Jose Hernandez would also address the school board on the importance of raising awareness of Mental Health and Justice Luz Ellena Chapa from the 4th Court of Appeals and Beth Confer Director of Community Relations for Clarity Child Guidance Center would be in attendance. Everyone was invited to attend and to wear the color Green to show support of Mental Health Awareness.
Adjournment
First and second motions were made to adjourn the meeting (Velma Peña, Rosa Escobar). The meeting was adjourned at 10:19 am.
